Single pointing long threads
Hi all,
I got asked if I could thread a whole heap of 12 mm bars (and I mean a heap of them) for some long 'J' bolts he needed. Each one needed 350mm of M12 x 1.75 thread. I had previously made a tailstock die holder so decided to use that. Dies just aren't what they used to be and the finish on the threads was atrocious. Single pointing is the only choice I had left. This required the use of the travelling steady. What worried me is that when I cut the square thread for the Douglas shaper I found the threads would cut in to the supports of the steady and I was constantly adjusting the arms.
I made up a different type of travelling steady and it worked a treat.

Fantastic thinking outside the square.
I was thinking it would be a travelling steady with a bearing on the end of the support.

Thanks Kryn. I had thought of that but for some reason I have very little travel in the support arms of the supplied travelling steady. It may have been a design flaw.
The guides for the one I made are removable so I can make new blocks, mount them and drill and ream in position if I need to do quantities of a different size.
They are case hardened as well which adds to the longevity.
