Hi all,
I got asked if I could thread a whole heap of 12 mm bars (and I mean a heap of them) for some long 'J' bolts he needed. Each one needed 350mm of M12 x 1.75 thread. I had previously made a tailstock die holder so decided to use that. Dies just aren't what they used to be and the finish on the threads was atrocious. Single pointing is the only choice I had left. This required the use of the travelling steady. What worried me is that when I cut the square thread for the Douglas shaper I found the threads would cut in to the supports of the steady and I was constantly adjusting the arms.
I made up a different type of travelling steady and it worked a treat.
