They are pretty rare, but there have been several just recently. One company shutting down I believe had several, the smallest being 30" between centres and IIRC 6.5"centre height, which would have been really nice in the home workshop, and the others much bigger. I can't recall from where they were being disposed, but there was a lot of other interesting machinery from the same sale, and I think that Grays were handling it all. The one CW referred to I think was an ex CSIRO machine in Sydney, and the second owner was selling that one. It started with a BIN price of $6.5K, but sold for a low $7K+.

Thereís a lot to factor in with used machines. A description from the seller and a sold price are often less than half the story. Some buyers are willing to risk their stake on what can seem dubious grounds but on other occasions it seems people (like me) actually go and run real tests.

Iíve bought used tools before that have taken many enjoyable hours to bring back to life. There have been others that Iíve wished Iíd never started on; having spent more time and money on replacing seemingly inconsequential components than I bargained for.

I canít remember which model the DSG I worked with years ago was. It wasnít a huge machine, though very solid and extremely accurate. I would sometimes make these pipe flare type components for gas chromatography some of which were not much bigger than the end of my finger and it was a joy to use. The one I looked at down in Melbourne a few years ago was an earlier machine a 15Ē, a good machine.

Just a bit more about the DSG lathe as I went and inspected it prior to its sale. The lathe came from a CSIRO tool room and the guy who owned had never used it. It was in excellent condition with almost no wear. The lathe was bigger than I expected and I think 2.5tonne was a bit on the low side. High end DRO and multifix QCTP. The multifix was the biggest Iíve seen and took 1.25 inch tooling. All the usual accessories so all in all an excellent larger lathe. I did bid on it but not aggressively as I would have to find room and I already have a 13x 42 DSG. It was awful nice though.

Interesting, if I had known I would have gone and looked.

Space isnít my primary constraint so the size of the lathe isnít too much of a worry in and of itself. However, I have 100m of grassed roadway to my new workshop site with two gentle sweeps through it, making larger trucks a bad idea on the block. I have had medium rigid class vehicles up and down it a few times without problems, so itís a matter of transferring larger items to the big car trailer or my mateís smaller truck.
