Replacement Hydraulic Piston Ring

Hi all, I have been disassembling and cleaning the new Elliot SG and discovered a couple of broken/perished piston rings in the table traverse hydraulic ram. I have rung several hydraulic supply places with no luck. Any ideas where I can source such a part? I have also rung a mower repair place hoping that the size may, just may match a common size for a chainsaw or mower but all they were interested in was a part number! The bore of the cylinder is 1.250" and the piston ring where it seats is 1.000" and the with of the ring is approx. 0.133" but anything up to the groove width of 0.150" will do, even slightly thicker as I could then grind it thinner need be. As for the material, well it was very brittle type of plastic something. The saddle cross feed rings are hardened steel so I'm thinking steel would be the go. As a last, last resort I have noted that a couple of O rings will fit but I have been informed that O rings would not be satisfactory since they would produce too much friction and may not create a smooth motion. Is there only one groove in the piston?

If it was me, I'd machine the groove out to 0.208" wide, and put a double acting self energising piston seal in there. RDA125 is the one I'd pick, It should be about a $12 buck seal. You can still stretch them to get them over a 1.250" solid piston.

(On Edit) A #214 quad ring will drop into the groove you have. Any decent bearing company up your end of town should have one.

Thanks Phil, that was a speedy reply! So, a #214 quad ring eh? I assume they will know what I mean, as I have no idea what I'm talking about! I'll give Frankston Bearings a call. Failing that, I'll take you up on the offer of the double acting self energising RDA125 doover whacky! Thanks heaps Phil! Simon Edit: There are two grooves, requiring two rings. I was thinking if I need to modify the grooves then I will make a new piston, that way if it does not work, I still have the original.

Two grooves changes things, what you need is two single acting seals mounted back to back. That will give you low drag on the non-pressurised side.
You want an R30580. Which will drop straight into your existing groove.

You could try two of the quad rings, but they will have more drag than the poly seal, unless you could find it in a 90 shore. But you would have to go to a real sealing company to find those. Renseal in Dandenong are probably the closest to you.
