Chinese electrical contactors

I am sure there probably are better options, but last time I went into a shop just to buy a basic contactor it was well over the $100 for a name brand and then because I did not seem to know what I wanted they suspected me of not having a licence and got the whole lecture on unlicenced electrical work and how doing it will bring plagues and make the blue whale go extinct and ultimately lead to the reincarnation of hitler...OK I might have ever so slightly exaggerated there a tiny bit...... As such I seldom visit electrical wholesalers any more.... Very limited range of goods and expensive....

Prefer just to do shopping online like here...

Sparkies are a protected species.Have a licence too. Think of the set up costs for a Sparkie to go it alone.1 half decent ute,few ladders.multimeter and a few hand tools.A decent lathe mill tooled up cost far more.And we get treated with suspicion when you want a 3 phase plug or switch when you go to the wholesalers.I ask the question. I ended up getting one from Sparky Direct....

All installed, all good.. Runs like a 39 year old one again...

ha ha.... Today a 6 pole change over switch arrived...

It is to switch between vertical and horizontal heads...

Why 6 poles I hear you ask?

Well the horizontal motor has a electromagnetic brake that is actuated when the stop button is pressed.... I am sure you are now asking "so what, the brake will be connected to the motor and disengage when power is applied to the motor" Which is yes, but the machine has a jog button that will disengage the brake for a maximum of 30 seconds for jogging the motor to change speeds..

So a six pole is needed..

The licenced person wired it in and all is good, I can flick it one way for horizontal spindle and the other for vertical.... I just wish the table was bigger on this mill....

Another contactor question...

This is for the 10EE... I have to replace the original that has developed a dislike for my RPC.... Simply put the voltage drop when I kick the MG in makes the contactor drop out.... It is an old Cutler Hammer from the 1940's...

I installed a SquareD modern contactor and no problems...

The question this time is about those overload devices they fit onto the contactor.... How do they adjust them and how do you know what size to get? Do I get something along the lines of this? The plate on the motor says 415V 5.85 amps.... Which would be per phase..

Hi RC, Mine has been replaced with a Sprecher Schuh 7.5 amps, set on 6 amps. It will still pop a 20A breaker on the sub-board, starting draw is pretty high. In your link, set by rotating the blue pointer to where you want it. Neil

make sure the O/L you select is same make as contactor...they are not universal...meaning one manufacturers will probably not fit anothers...although some do ...with a pinch

ideally select one with rated FLA amps of motor to be mid-range on O/L block scale...ie not at end of range...

edit....mmm just had a look and its a toss up between the the 4 - 6amp or the 5.5 - 8amp
so I'd go the 5.5-8 mmmmm maybe the 4-6 oh what the heck..either or will do

also be awar that most O/L's these days have allowance for overloading on the setting range. Back in the dark ages one set the O/L to fla plus about 10%, but you dont need to do that today with good O/L's

Thanks, I bought that one I linked to and a 32 amp 415V contactor from the same place.... I bought one previously from sparky direct and the quality was good, which was amazing considering the price...
