    Hi
    I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this and I apologise for my lack of technical expertise.
    I have an old Dawn No 7 quick release vice. I rescued it from a scrap heap a few years ago and it looks it is a goer. However there is one problem.
    There is a what looks like a brass U bolt which allows for the quick release. The teeth have been worn down over the years and the thread slips. My question is, is it worth or
    possible to have this repaired or should I just get the cast iron U bolt.
    I have contacted Dawn in Melbourne and they have a cast iron replacement part for $50.00. I guess the brass part is designed to wear and not damage the screw.
    I don't know how a cast iron U bolt would go it doesn't seem like it will work well.

    Dawn wouldn't sell it if it was not going to work.
    The CI will last longer than the brass.

    It looks like the thread is the same as my Record, which is a long way from a standard thread, be it ACME, square or 55/60 deg. If it is then the cost and time in trying to reproduce the angles involved would not be worth it. The CI will probably outlast you if you keep it well lubed.
