I found a Wanner 300-4 oiler on UK Ebay a week ago for an incredibly cheap 10 Pound ( there is a new Wanner oiler for a Myford on Ebay UK at present for 72 Pound ). Turned out to be the model required for my mill's ( and Greg Q's Hembrug's ) domed oil nipples. The seller advertised it as both used and unused. Shop soiled may have been more appropriate. It had not been used but externally there were rust spots. Removal of the end cap revealed more rust. I put some oil in the thing and pumped it out. There was rust in the oil. The idea of rust laden oil in the 13's Reuil-Malmaison la precision Industrielle vertical spindle bearings had no appeal and rather than sling the Wanner in the bin, I thought I would pull it apart. But how?
I initially thought that the pump assembly had been pressed together but for an expensive tool that should enable the replacement of the cup seal, it seemed unlikely. Close inspection with a loupe revealed a thread behind the pressed steel end cap. I removed the cap with an adjustable pin spanner. More rust. To remove the knurled brass nose and avoid crushing the brass tube, the lathe chuck proved the perfect answer. The knurled nose was tight.
There was an O ring at the end of the outer steel sleeve. It had become hard and inflexible. I struggled to remove it. Eventually its removal was achieved by skewering it with a point from one of my compass sets and prising it out with the aid of a small screwdriver. I'm hoping the O ring was not some special hard grade of rubber.
Most of the rust was removed mechanically with jeweller's files and 1200 wet and dry. There was rust in the pressed steel end cap which was difficult to access. I immersed the cap in Corrodip with good results.
The external bodywork was cleaned up with a wire wheel and re blued with Birchwood Casey "Super Blue" Liquid Gun Blue. It's pretty close to the original finish on the steel.
Hopefully I won't have any drama procuring a replacement O ring.
If all goes well, I will refit the domed nipples I removed from the mill and do away with the awkward to use pom pom oiler I've been stuggling with* for the past two years. Another hopefully!
