Not related to the wire but for future reference the bearing cups are backed by seal cups. Obvious to everyone else apparetly but not to me! I swear that for all the world they looked like part of...

    Spring part number.

I've not ordered up the little spring yet or the replacement bearings. What was the part number for this spring? It might be in my parts tray or jammed in the old spindle.

    I'll get one with my...

Pictures Or It Did Not Happen

So I successfully got the key out. Drilled a hole in the key. Tapped it for an M3. Tapped out nicely with a screw in it for a bit more leverage. You can see where I discoloured it by over heating it....

Thanks everyone for this info. Allterrain50 I will be along at some point to order up a new spindle and bearings I think. I could probably clean up the original but has discoloured a bit after...

    Koyo At The Front

At the front is an 18590 Koyo. No other letters on the bearing. Does appear to be closed unlike the rear. I think maybe the rear bearing on it has spun a little. Looks like I am probably up for new...

    Koyo Bearings

    Hello everyone.

I came across this thread and wondered if anybody else had seen the same bearings as I just found in my Hercus.

Got to putting the gear set back on the side of my Hercus 260...

Took the gears out and soaked it all for a bit in solvent. Amazingly under all that muck the gear set appears to be in fine condition. Even the gears in the handles look all right. Do those pins...

Ah thank you! That makes sense. I just watched a tear down of a South Bend gearbox and it looked like it had another roller pin through the gear set. If I count the nail as a roller pin I have...
  10. The horror

i think it is some combination of wood brass and derlin. The rest of the Lathe was fairly clean and the carriage and the apron assembly were clean. But inside the gearbox seems to be some combination...

Removed the offending nail from the last roll pin hole. Cut the top off it and drifted it out. Slid the top shaft out being careful to keep the gears with the levers and to keep them in the same...

Got up to the fourth roll pin today and discovered this beauty smashed in the hole !

A quick check of the Hercus 260 parts list does not show a nail listed! Perhaps it is a rare hard to...

Turned out to be a cap screw. Interestingly it is the same colour red in the middle as the bed and green at the other end for the Green colour.

Successfully got in to it this arvo. It was a cap screw. Cleaned out the underside and then got a torch and a mirror. Was expecting to see a nut on a stud. Instead just a cap screw. Got a bar and...
  15. Query about removing head stock on Hercus 260T

    Hullo everyone,

After successfully rebuilding the carriage / apron assembly on my Hercus lathe I now need to attend to cleaning out the gearbox and the head stock.

    I've had no problems taking...

For whoever comes after me ordering a new replacement pin might not do the trick. As what is happening is the combination of worn cam and pin. I think if one replaces one then one needs to replace...

    Thanks for the response.

I think the pin is bent. Not visible to the eye but I think it might be binding in the hole.

    To much friction somewhere.

It could also be user error.

    I don't...

    Pin definitely suspect

When I tore it down again I tried the pin both ways because it is indeed worn more on one end than the other. Not by much but visible. It didn't seem to make a difference in either position.

    Then...
