Hi all I have a generic type drill press at least 30 years old (purchased new) I attempted to bore a 22mm hole with a hole saw the other day, things did not go well, seems like it is time to replace the bearings.
My question is concerning the spring in the rise and fall, will this instantly unwind and fly across the work shop just want to be prepared before I pull it apart

The spring in question is a flat wound type and has a flat bend in the end which hooks in a straight slot.
Said spring usually has a cap/ lid fixed by a nut on a screw thread and can can be removed.
The spring is made like a flat clock spring.The spring center tab fits in a split but into the thread.
There is no drama or tricky bits in it.It shouldn't fly out sideways.
You might need to use a pair of needle nose pliers to unhook the flat tab.
Its pretty obvious on how it works once you take the cover off.

Thanks for that just did not want any sudden surprises the other stuff should be pretty straight forward, so long as it is just bearings.
No the spring is very unlikely to fly across the room. It will violently unwind when you undo it though. I use a thick welding glove and just hold it (the spring housing) when I undo them (don't ever hold them without gloves). Easier to let them unwind in a much more controlled manner.
