Firstly, let me say that i've looked at EVERY lathe in lathes.co.uk and nothing matches ...
There is NOTHING cast or attached to it that gives any ID.
4.5 inch centre height (does this make it a 9" lathe?) about 30 inches between centres.
Looks a bit South Bend-ish but I really don't know.
Missing the reverse tumbler gear only. Works quite well, a bit worn but I'll see to that ...

Hi @contrebasse looks very much like an early Mars Mars Lathes - Hercules and 6-inch but without the ‘power shaft’ across the front and associated lever on the apron. The tool post ‘handle’ is very similar to that on my Great Scot. Unless the bed has been reground, there should be an identifying serial stamped on the rear bed shear (right hand end). (Also on the tailstock base).

I am guessing this one is around 1920-1940 but its only a hunch.
I think you have a Mars lathe (read "Conrik" lathe as well) with an "after market" tailstock, and carriage handwheel.
I have a Mars Great Scott.
It would not be surprise me that the tailstock went "missing" and the carriage wheel handle were replaced.
Not much help really, but it may give you an insight! To make it original, you would need to make (that means mould and cast) a casting of an original tailstock, that you could machine to fit.

Specialist gear cutting shops will make one for you but for something like that, any number of our members cut gears. I'm in Adelaide so it would cost you postage both ways but there are others closer who could probably do it.Quote:

They have inverted V's on bed. Yours is a flat bed.
The Great Scot has two "leadscrews."

I'm wondering if this has at least some of it made as a 'one-off' machine?
The rack appears to made up from multiple sections that don't all have exactly the same profile which strikes me as unusual for a production machine and the apron appears to be constructed from plate but that isn't 100% certain from the photos so far.
Mind you, if it has been a custom build of sorts it has had a truckload of work put into it.
Can you get a photo of how the back-gear and bull gear engagement are set-up please?

And the spindle thread is a weird 1-5/16 - 8tpi one. Very hard to find taps for this. I need to make a backplate ... and I think I'm faced with a steep learning curve to bore a thread like that!!
