Tailstock Question
I am refurbishing a tailstock from a metal work lathe to use it on a wood turning lathe. There is a blind hole in the top of the casting near the barrel clamp, does anyone know what is its purpose? The hole is approximately 10mm in diameter and 16 mm deep, it does not have a thread. Picture 2 is an overall view and the hole in question is the one on the right in the first picture. Thanks for any assistance.

It would probably have held a little dipper for putting white lead lubricant or tallow on your dead center

Is there a keyway cut in the spindle at the 3 ock position? It is hard to tell by the second pic.
If so, the hole may be to line up a key mechanism which might? engage the keyway.

Hi caskwarrior, an interesting possibility and not one I would have thought of.
Hi Grahame, the keyway is at the 6 o'clock position and is controlled by a threaded pin, there appears to be no connection to the hole, see attached pic.
Thanks,Attachment 384317 Mm.
