Lathe transport

Hi All, new to the forum. I have just bid and won a Hercus C model lathe. The lathe is located in Sutherland shire NSW, I am in Adelaide SA. Has anyone used a particular transport company that is reputable and honest and fair with pricing. I have tried a few online quotes, the cheapest being $950, the most expensive $2500, I will call a few companies tomorrow for some other pricing. I can't justify paying 5 times what the lathe itself cost, and I also don't want to let the seller down. If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

I commiserate, I know the feeling. I do not know of any reliable freight companies, but I know there are some unreliable ones.

There are/were even major companies that used to charge extra for air services by plane for speed while actually using trucks all the way until something like A Current Affair shipped a package by air with a functioning altimeter to prove the couriers were defrauding the clients.

Troubles may arise with parts going missing if you use two or more intermediate connecting services (this comes from an acquaintance in the antique business who does regular shipping in and out of furniture, minimum $300 a shot, and that is for things average people can lift without needing a hoist or forklift or pallet.

I also commiserate with you, but even more with the seller.

Having been in this situation where someone from interstate bids for an item and then finds out that it is going to cost a fair bit of money to have the item transported is not a nice position to be in. After all the total cost to you is not only what you agreed to buy it for, so transport costs should be factored in to the buying decision process.

Much better to find these things out before one bids and inconvenience sellers.

I agree with you Big Shed. I will put it down to the excitement of bidding for the lathe. I am lucky enough that I have found a good bloke in the seller who understands, even though it really is my own doing. I am awaiting for the seller to pass on some info, I have found a company that can transport the lathe for me for around $350 - $400 which is great.

I will be interested to learn how you go with things in the end, transport-wise.

Thanks John for the link. Just filled in an online quote from Supreme Freight and it is quite good. I am still waiting for the seller to confirm how many boxes of items he has to send, then I can gain a realistic quote and hopefully finally have the lathe delivered.

Funny, I put a bid on that lathe as well, as it was close to home. Almost every other one I see on ebay is in Adelaide. Now I'm looking at two in Melbourne.

Hi Jeff I must have missed the ones from Adelaide. Anyhow good luck with your lathe hunting. I am still awaiting some confirmation on number of packages from seller.

Tanii51 - Supreme Freight seem to be the pick of the bunch at the moment, I received a call from them today, they seem like a good company, they discussed lowering the price in regards to needing lifting equipment etc. At least they have spoken to me, and not solely relied on an online quote form, I appreciated that.

Hi All, just a quick update. For those interested, I organised transport for my lathe this morning through Supreme Freight as recommended by tanii51. They were great to deal with and the final cost of delivery from NSW to my door in Adelaide is $266 for a lathe, the cast iron stand and a crate of parts with the motor. This is also with a powered tailgate to make life easier unloading the lathe.

I will definitely use them for any other interstate purchases etc. Once again tanii51 thanks for suggesting them to me. My lathe is being picked up this Friday, for a Tuesday delivery.

glad it all worked out ok ive used them ( supreme freight a few times with no dramas and good price too )
maybe we should have a wanted section for hercus lathes and save some freight money seems a waste freighting in opposite directions for the same thing
suggest contact malcom @australianmetalworking hobbyist for the eastern states and i have some contacts in sth oz
ive only got 1 lathe left to sell but top shelf price cos its nerly all new
but i do know where theres a couple of others
