Thread: Quietest workshop air compressor?

I've heard noisy ones, and sometimes some that are surprisingly quiet.
It's not obvious to me what makes the difference.
Any advice?

You can silence just about any compressor by baffling the intake.

If you dont need the full volume you can also turn some of the heads off.

I have an old twin piston style, sitting on top of the cylinder, came out of an old petrol station.
Is a bit noisy, so put it outside and build a shed around it and lined it with polystyrene foam.
Really helped a lot and neighbours are OK with it.

My buddy bought a similar style compressor but it had 3 cylinders and one at least is a odd size to the other two.
Boy, does that run really quiet, would not wake a baby.
I think it is a Rand make.
He was told that the odd cylinder was designed for reducing sound.
Must some how neutralise the noise fequencies!!!

I have not had much experience with compressors but I recently got a Chicago Air Hush 70 and can vouch for it. Maybe my old one was pretty loud but the Hush is approx 10db quieter - and it is the noisiest one in that range. You can turn motors on/off separately if you don't need them both. Also, it holds air way better than my old one. The old one would empty itself in 24 hours or so. I haven't turned this one on for a week and it is still stilling there almost full.
