I have traced the base of the belt cover on cardboard for dimensions.

Frankly speaking I have no welding skills and no equipment or space for it. I am renting a unit as I move around a fair bit for work and most landlords/property managers raise an eyebrow to such stuff.

I do have a hand operated bender with several dies (capacity for sheet metal strips of about 30mm height and max thickness about 2mm) to make the sides and then use my bandsaw in horizontal mode or just use a jigsaw to cut the top section. I can then get someone to weld it together for me. I guess this is probably what I will end up doing at some stage.

I have been contemplating about designing the top cover in CAD and perhaps 3d printing it in sections but keep telling myself this is a bad idea.

That's what I did. Same drill press with a different name. I doubled the motor HP to give more power at low RPM. Second pic shows the added idler pulley and a notched belt, which dramatically reduced vibration.

Thanks for the photos and I can refer back to them if I ever go that path.

What HP or KW is that 3 phase motor rated at?

The 3 phase motor and VFD is tempting in that I can adjust speeds and run the motor in reverse.

    Maybe a future project.

    Hi kafie1980,

    Roughly 750 watts = 1 Hp ! So 1.5Kw = 2 Hp and so on.
    Best Regards:

Will keep an eye out for a similar motor and a VFD.

Assembled back the base/column/table together after cleaning and lubing everything.

Next I need to start cleaning the head/spindle/quill.

Decided to tackle the drill press head assembly.

Basically a big tub of dirty parts:

    EEC49F37-C73A-4539-9D6E-C38A5D2B8160.jpg

Pulled the bearings out, there were 3 x 6205z and 1 x 5203z deep grove ball bearings (sealed on one side) and 1 x thrust race bearing. The grease felt dry and curdy but no play or wear on them. They will need to be repacked with grease prior to re-assembly and so they got tossed them in a jar of kerosene to get the old grease out (shaking/stirring them every so often).

After several hours of elbow grease the parts are shiny:

Time for some much needed rest.

    Assembled everything:

I have not ordered any belts since I will need to continue searching for the intermediate/idler pulley. The belt cover will come last.

Here’s a photo of the cover on the old machine I’ve got here.

The lower piece that is attached to the casting is 174x497 measured across the extreme edges of the slight flange on the top.

    Photos from the top

If those look like they will match yours let me know.

    Thanks for sharing the photos.

Unfortunately my belt cover is more rounder in shape towards motor end. Furthermore the dimensions on my base cover are approximately 560mm x 190mm. I doubt this will fit well as I may need to modify the mounting holes etc.

But the center idle/speed pulley appears to be compatible and a slight difference should not matter much in lowering down the speeds for metal work. Not sure if you will be willing to part with this for a fair price but I am all ears and happy to discuss that over PM.

I measured mounting hole for the center idle/speed pulley to be roughly 13.5mm on my drill press if that matches what you have:

I also noticed you have a 5 step pulley on the spindle which I suppose should have been a 4 step to match the rest of the 4 step pulleys on your drill press. Probably it was replaced at some stage. (Unless my eyes are deceiving me).

Spent some time on the internet chasing up the Center pulley and found a post: Slowing Down My Drill Press !!! | The Hobby-Machinist

Interestingly Grizzly in the US has parts for the G7943 drill press that should be in the ball park for something that will work for this drill press with slight modifications to the mounting hole on the head assembly (if required): Parts for 14" Heavy-Duty Benchtop Drill Press at Grizzly.com

    Capture.JPG

The cost of the brand new parts from Grizzly is US$ 38. This does not include any taxes or postage and unfortunately they do not post outside US and Canada.

And so the search continues ....

Constantly being harassed by scammers on gumtree at the moment claiming they have the part but upon requesting photos or pricing they shy away

Finally found one locally in Adelaide for 20 Aussie bucks that came from a similar Taiwanese drill press.

There is no way I could make one cheaply myself with the current inflated prices.

Needs a bit of a clean but it will start a new life soon.

    Hi kafie1980,
I am pleased to hear you found your pulley.

It shouldn't be long until you you have the D/Press operating.
    Thanks for keeping us informed.

    Thanks Steve.

I left you a PM to let you know I found one.

I was hoping you don’t go through too much hassle finding it but that thing looks like treasure

All good mate - it was where I expected it would be so was easy to find.

I didn’t get your PM though. Hopefully you’ve done my usual trick and typed it up then not actually sent it!
If it’s showing as sent at your end let me know so I can investigate…
