I bought this nutsert kit for both my son and I.
The kit is great, but you really need the longer tool or the drill adaptor for M8 and up, as I have pretty strong hands and this tool Max's out at M6.
The drill tool is expensive at around $100, from memory the longer tool is around $40

They have gone up in price, the next inline is $149, so you would need to using it often to justify the price

Just when you all think that oils are oils and rivnuts are rivnuts consider the following :

    Probably not readily available locally.

Thanks guys, you all have combined to answer just about every aspect on this subject.
Fantastic response, I think we all love to tinker with fixings.

I was looking at Rivnuts as they seemed a good general-purpose tool to have in the shop.

    DaveJ,
Yes, I dream about 3 mm backplates in electrical boxes, but such boxes are just too expensive now.
I also am reusing the original control box supplied with the mill, at 2.2 mm it is Ok.
We should compare our boxes at some time.
The friction drilling is really interesting, I will research this further.

    DH,
I will contact you to discuss a possible loan of the tool to get some experience.

    Keep well all,
    John.

I've just mounted my 600x400x200mm cabinet with DRO scale cables routed behind with 20x3mm flat bar it to make it all neat and out of harm's way.
Just working out a nice looking arm to go to the control panel I'm going to build.

The mill is fully functional, but there are cables and wires everywhere since I've added so many home built accessories, like electric power drawbars X2, power, power quill feed etc.

It's still only a manual mill, but with 2 vfds, one for the vertical and horizontal which will be a blessing and all the other stuff I have here to go in to make it like factory install is a lot of work.

John, I think I've a set here you can have, I'll even throw in some 5mm Rivnuts, if you want it.
I upgrade to a heavier duty set

For one offs where not worth expense of buying, tool you can use a bolt, washer and a nut to set the rivnuts.

Ive used a similar method when I had to install a heap of M12 steel ones in a conveyor frame.

I bought the last cheap slotted cable ducting from electrotraders.
    40x80mm and 25x80mm.
It was only $13 for 2x 1m lengths and $10 postage.
I looked around and it easily went up to $85 for a 1m piece, it was runout stock.
It's a pity they where not at the same time to save on postage.
It will make the install look neat and tidy, just like the factory boxes on mills.

    Thanks for the heads up.
Seems the $149 are the way to go, or just go back to the long handled manual tool

Don't buy this type of Nutsert tool. They deform and split at the plastic nose section with 6mm nutserts. I've destroyed a couple of them. Cheap eBay ones are probably worse.

    Hi Guys,

Wouldn't it be better to turn up some mandrels to fit into a pop rivet tool, threaded to suit what ever nutsets/rivnuts used.

I made several mandrels to suit 2, 4, & 6Ba and 3, 4, 5mm press serts ! Though if you don't have the room to press them in, a mandrel in a pair of lazy tongs works well.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

Is this the type you use?
