Soldering done and I’ve also managed to upload the software to the board. Annoyingly I don’t have the cable for the control board so I’ve only been able to get brief sightings of the controls and how they work, but I am seeing what I would expect.
I now need to cut a hole in my lathe control box for the display.

Quick setup in the garage tonight to cut the hole in my lathe control box for the ELS. Clamp the box on the mill and cut out the hole just following lines and roughly aligning it:
Quick check before I break down the setup:
Looking good!! I don’t have a 3.5mm tap so I drilled the mounting holes out to 3mm and forced them in to the plastic.
Worked fine and whilst it’s a compact setup, I’m really happy with how it’s turning out.
My lathe controls and VFD are all on my right so I can adjust without any worry about getting caught up in the work. Having leadscrew control here is also really exciting and I cannot wait to give it a go!

I went to Jaycar today and picked up some bits for the ELS. Specifically a 5v power supply for the TI board and connectors for the control panel.
Annoyingly I bought the wrong connectors!! So I’m a fit of annoyance I soldered wires to both boards to see if it would work!
Plugged in my new power supply and got this…
Woo hoo! It seems like I’ve managed to write the code to the board! All the buttons work as expected and the excitement levels turned up to 11!
I’ve already desoldered the wires and cleaned up the pins with some wick. I also have some connectors in the mail. Hopefully they’re the right ones.

A bit overkill but I now have the TI board in an enclosure, it’s not water tight as I cut big holes in the bottom for the wires, but it’s definitely dust resistant and will stop little fingers getting in there and messing something delicate.
I’ve also installed a power board and the 48v power supply and VFD will have plugs put on and plugged in.
Here’s the TI box with the lid on and I have everything wired up and the software updated with the final drive (I think):
Just waiting on my connectors for the control panel, my encoder and the pulleys and belt for the drive from the stepper motor to the leadscrew.

@jack620 I implemented your idea today. Simple cap screw with a lock nut. Roughly set to 10mm:
Crashing the indicator pushes the cap screw and then the whole indicator mount slides along the ways with the magnets.

Got a Cat5 cable today in preparation for my connectors coming in and what do you know, the connectors were delivered in the afternoon mail along with my main drive belt.
Made the connections and routed the cable without any issues:

Weeeeeeell, it’s not actually working yet. Still waiting on the encoder to arrive and the drive pulleys.
Once the encoder arrives I should be able to at least test to see if the configuration is working.
I can’t wait to test changing feed rate on the fly though to see how it affects the surface finish with carbide inserts. Also really keen to test metric threading
Apparently in the future there are plans to try and get feeding to an automatic stop and also metric threading without having to worry about the issues with disconnecting the halfnuts. Those would be incredible!

I’m waiting on parts to arrive still and I’ve run out of jobs in the garage so I’m making up new ones to amuse myself whilst I wait.
Pleased with my indicator carriage holder I’ve looked in to further options that will allow me to solid stop the carriage too. I could just create a hard stop but where’s the fun in that. So instead I’m going to try and make one with a micrometer (sort of) adjustment. The plan will be to have a graduated wheel with 1 turn equals 1mm
Plenty of similar projects on the web so I’m just trying to make something similar.
Ive made the rough shape in MDF and will look to transfer this to a block of steel I have on the way.
This is the side profile:
The rounded end is just a hair under 25mm so I can use 1” Alu stock and knurl it and trim it down a bit.
The adjuster will be roughly this wide on the top with enough space either side for locking bolts. This is just to gauge the width, the depth is clearly not correct:
Space is tight but I’ll have 2 M6 bolts on either side to lock it to the ways. I’ve already made the bolts and copied the square head of my lathe so I can use the same Hercus spanner on them. I’ve cleaned, wire wheeled and cold blued them already:

Damn I hate waiting for these last 2 parts. Dying to get it all together and see if it all works.
However in the mean time I put the lathe back to standard so I could progress with the lathe stop. Pig of a job with the change gears which further makes me excited to get the ELS done.
I’d bought some steel and Alu for the stop:
No real dimensions, just some templates that I used to create some scribe line. But that’s a solid chunk of steel and I wasn’t sure if my newly converted bandsaw would cope:
Needless to say it worked a treat. That’s 40mm steel so it’s slow and steady but I reckon I had all 3 cuts done in about 15 or so minutes.
The cuts were relatively straight too but it was then in the the mill to get all the faces flat and square.
A while on the mill to drill the 8mm cross hole for the stop, a threaded hole for a set screw to align with the key on the stop shaft as well as hogging out the centre.
Then it was over to the lathe to knurl some Alu and drill as thread a hole. I really surprised myself on the Alu and not only got a perfect knurl but I also nailed the width with my new dial gauge carriage tool.
I’ve also really surprised myself with the cold blued bolts which are looking fantastic too.
Here it is, ready for the stop shaft to be made:
I’m going to try and cut the gradations on the mill with my rotary table and dividing plates. Plus I also need to round off the ends of the holder and make the bottom plate.
