Spot the difference...
Anyone know where i can get replacements? 10x3.4, > 13long. Spring 25mm long, 6.4mm dia.
Ebay isn't my friend, can't find anything that thin.Last edited by russ57; 22nd Aug 2021 at 08:18 PM. Reason: Better photo

Get some vacuum cleaner brushes eg those used on Electrolux etc and re solder them to the braided wire coming from the end cap. You may need to file the brushes to fit. Most electric motor re winders / repairers would have them.

I'll check my spares (which have mostly come from side of the road throw out chop saws, etc).
In the past I have also sanded/filed the graphite blocks down to fit.
I think I learnt that trick from my Dad?

I might have to go that path.
What concerns me is the motor is supposed to be 750w which seems high for the size of the brushes, so they could be (supposed to be at least) copper loaded.

10mm wide 3.4mm thick
With 25mm spring preferably as it looks like the failed one may have the wrong spring

Quick search on eBay I found these, very easily filed down to size. AliExpress would have heaps more sizes

Hi Russ, Guys,
I've been making replacement carbon brushes for quite some time ! My mill motor uses similar brushes, but I can't fit pigtails to them so I have to rely on the springs and surface contact to carry the motor current.

These are a couple of the worn down brushes from my 750W mill motor. You can see that the springs take a bit of hammering from the motor current ! Actually this is good in so much that when the springs fail there is no danger of them running into the armature.

These three pictures show a rather large carbon brush that was given to me by a motor re-winder. They are much too big, so I cut them down using the bandsaw and then sand them down to the correct thickness. When cut they are twice the needed length.
Each pair lasts around a year before the spring fails. In the first picture there is a new one and a worn down one. The springs very conveniently are from Hoover vacuum cleaner motor brushes. The Hoover brushes are square in section and far too small to use.
All the dealers I've tried don't want to sell you carbon brushes, but are happy to rip you off for a new motor.Best Regards:
Baron J.

If there's someone near you who does power tool repairs they will probably have a drawer full of various brushes, might be worth a shot.

Since I never throw anything away, i may have a couple of dead brushed motors hiding somewhere.

My son's 'under the desk' type treadmill started to make a penetrating whistling noise - coming from the motor brushes.
Despite being 6 months old and under warranty the supplier did not seem to be able to send out spares, so they just sent out a new motor, which after a bit also whistled!
Searched around and as expected found an online repairer with a photo of an identical DC motor, but when I phoned about brushes for it the answer was they never keep them because there is no call for brushes because the motors (and brushes) never wear out, presumably because the treadmills are thrown out first.
We fixed the whistling noise - sort of -with strategically placed damping.
Online searches revealed that for some reason the UK seems to be the best place to go for replacement brushes....

I meant to add that I vaguely remember (accurately I hope) that one of the websites mentioned allows searching for brushes by their dimensions, and with a bit of luck you may find that something from a common power tool is just a bit bigger than what you need. Then it's out with the file and emery...

I would contact Little Machine Shop and ask them for help. If they don't have them they would know where they could be found. https://littlemachineshop.com/default.php
Maybe this one of theirs could be sanded to size.
