    Default R u ok?

    Hi all,

This year has seen some unique circumstances and challenges for all of us. Whether it be financial, social or spatial, educational or other challenges as a result of the raft of restrictions we have seen both in Victoria and around the country, it's fair to say that we have all in some way been exposed to dificult circumstances.

So, let me please take this oppotunity to say to everyone on this forum that if you are struggling to cope in any way as a result of this pandemic, I urge you to please talk to someone. Anyone. You are not alone by any stretch of the imagination.

Below I have links to several organisations that can help you. Please see this as an oppotunity to take that step if you are lost or feel dispair.

Please feel free to PM me if you want to chat. I'm not a councillor BTW, but I have been in the recieving end of councilling from time to time within the capacity of my job. There is no shame.

Special thanks and mention to Phil (machtool) for getting in touch with me and asking me the question R U OK? He has a genuine concern for many of the metalworking fraternity as a result of COVID.

    Take care of yourselves.

    Simon

The events of this year will certainly be remembered for some time and their effects felt for many a year to come.
Personally, other than taking a week of stored RDO's (which ultimately turned out to not be necessary in the grand scheme of things) and having to buy toilet paper by the 4 pack instead of my usual 12 pack, my family was basically untouched, yet other people that I met through work etc. have had the bottom fall out of their world. Some have actually done better financially on the various Government assistance packages than they would have in the normal run, while others found themselves in a no man's land where they didn't quite qualify for the various schemes. A whole generation of parents learned what their "angelic" children's teachers endure in the course of educating them and bottle shops saw a dramatic upturn in sales, possibly as a result of parent's having their children at home 24/7. Car crashes dramatically dropped in number and traffic jams were non existent.
None of us know the path that others walk and unfortunately many suffer in silence not wishing to show weakness or simply not knowing how to ask for help as they've always been the helper.
Stay safe, stay chatty. This is far from over.

What we have seen so far is but a minor inconvenience.

The real disaster will probably start next year, no vaccine and the federal government debt levels so extreme they are unable to prop up the unsustainable industries any longer.

I predict a world war within 20 years.

Looking at how many Australians phissed themselves over the China flu I doubt Oz will be involved in any future war...

China will be there. No doubt plenty of other countries who would like a land grab while others are distracted.

Of course could a vaccine be found within the next few years, things could be averted. But the talk on vaccine development seems to have fallen by the wayside for the time being.

    Hi Guys,

According to one of our national newspapers today, we are going to start vaccinating NHS staff and over 85 year olds from next month !

    Gentelmen, with respect;

Can we please keep contributions to this thread on point? Have a look at the thread title and if your post is outside the scope of the title then please start another thread.

Don't get me wrong, some of the theories, ideas and what the future holds is an interesting topic all it's own but I don't want mental health and in particular the mental health ramifications acsociated with the events of this year to be diluted or lost in some general waffle or chit chat.

    Cheers,

    Simon

What posts to this thread are not related to “the events of this year” ?

None. But that was not my request.

My request was to keep posts related to the thread title. The title reads "R U OK?"

I'm finding it dificult to judge your tone or mood but you sound annoyed for some reason. My request was polite, to the point and respectful. Members on this forum are smart people, I'm sure they can work it out.

    Umm...

Bit mystified I am. Is it you want people to only be depressed in certain clearly defined ways in relation to an aspect of the current hysteria, or, can they be depressed about various aspects of the hysteria in a myriad of ways that may not align exactly with the defined causative of the approved depressive subject... ?

    No worries Simon.

What people have to keep in mind is while it may not seem like it everyone in the same boat is not alone. And I know when things are not going well you think slogans like that are just plain stupid. However most people are decent people. Even if they may not have the same beliefs as you they have the same hopes and the same fears. Yes there are complete dickheads out there that you would not on if they were on fire, but those people really are in a minority.

Last year and the start of this year we here went through the worst drought in living memory. It was a drought the likes of which we had never had before in that buying in feed was so difficult and it was very expensive. We had no idea when the drought was going to break, we had no idea where the next load of feed was going to come. Our group of neighbours and friends used to keep in contact with each other on a regular basis just to chat, and then you understand that we were all together in this our situations were always slightly different but similar at the same time. To survive we ended up doing things we have never done before and may not again. So what we faced while totally different to what the people affected by the economic fallout of the virus faced, the issues are similar.

One thing I learned was you have to be very tolerant of others. If you are under a lot of stress little niggly things get amplified and you just have to ask yourself, is it really that important right now. Just let it go. Everyone handles stress differently and remember in Australia there is always help available but you have to take the step to get it.

    Hi RC,

I couldn't agree more with what you said. I can't begin to imagine what you guys went through up there. Completely different to COVID but a source of huge stress and uncertainty.

I'm not saying one any worse or better than the other. Different people face different challenges.

In the time I've been a member of this forum I have enjoyed your contributions and value opinions/views.

I'm more than happy for people to share their challenges and struggles.

    Cheers

    Simon
