Never heard of it before. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Does it archive the data from old pages?

Small Hole Bore Gauge, Fittings.
Hi Guys,
I've now started to make the fittings for the divider !
As I mentioned earlier, I have some bits of brass, however I've discovered that the brass that I thought I had is actually white bronze. Its as hard as pot, it turns quite well but is a pig to drill, particularly when I want to drill 20 mm deep with a 1.8 mm drill. Anyway its done now.

I super glued the two pieces together put them in the four jaws chuck and turned the spigot down to size. I faced off the end to make sure that I had a flat square surface. In this picture I've finished the turning and have marked the position of the holes for drilling.

This is the part ready for drilling. You can see the marks left by the chuck jaws. This piece is 25 mm long.

I set the work piece up in the drill press vise using a pair of parallels and a set square to ensure that everything was vertical and square.
The next job is to turn the other end. I was going to make a ball shape on there but after seeing the picture of ball gauges, I've decided to go for a flat bottom and a disc, that is the next job.
Thanks for the help and comments Guys, its very much appreciated.Best Regards:

Machining Finished !
Hi Guys,
Right I've finished machining my calliper fittings.

At least they fit properly. I made the measurement surface 2 mm wide and turned a 10 degree taper back to the small diameter after facing the head.

These close up pictures show the fittings.

A close up from the front. That front is 6 mm by 11.5 mm. It easily fits into a 12 mm bore.
That's all folks ! Thanks for looking.Best Regards:

I tried and was unsuccessful but did find a working link from a message I had sent to another. It is for Windows and he has since added Android too. Neither work on my Apple stuff so I am going to see if there is some way I can get it to work.

Thanks Pete!
Note to others: The link above opens the Robert Fenichel metalwork webpage, and a link on that page ( http://www.fenichel.net/programs/PinGauges.zip ) downloads the zipped Win and Android applications that allow calculation of the size of a hole from the three gauge pins that are a close fit inside.
I've yet to try it.
Cheers,
Bill

Small hole bore gauge tool !
Hi Guys,
Just a few notes after having a chance to play about with making some measurement tests with my new tool.
I found it very sensitive, its easy to get the gauge set to the bore size. I made tests from 12 mm to 40 mm. The hole depth was not at any time an issue. What I did find was that as you measured larger holes the divider became more rigid and less sensitive to the micrometer making the determination of the size.
While this tool is good for getting near its not easy to avoid the probes flexing when measuring with a mic.
A set of proper split ball gauges is on the cards.Best Regards:

My New Ball Gauges !
Hi Guys,
Well after my experiments with making a reasonable attempt to make a split ball hole gauge I went and bought a set. These came from Aliexpress, ordered on the 21st June and arrived here 6th July, so just a fortnight delivery time.

Nicely packaged in a plastic wallet.
I've spent a little time playing with them and found that even with the smallest one I can get within a couple of thou with a mic compared to a pin gauge. A pity that the biggest one only goes up to just over 13 mm, about 13.3 mm. Open them any more and they don't close up as they should. I'm happy with these.Best Regards:

Once you get to 13mm you’re into telescopic gauge territory.
I’ve got a couple of sets of those but must get myself some ball gauges.

I've had my telescoping gauges for quite a few years now and not that long ago I bought a set of expanding ball gauges, Chinese - they look the same as yours and also an inside mic. I found that it does take some practice to get consistent results - the inside mic probably being the easiest, when using the telescoping gauge and the expanding ball gauge I now always rinse repeat until I get two consecutive measurements the same.

Abom has a good video on telescope gauge technique (among his many other good videos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6YLK0F3ytc
