Default GMF 8" Utility Grinder Resurection BEGINS

    Thanks for the Info J.C.
Just wanted to make sure everything was still ok, so i turned it on.
The grinder did start but only when i spun the grinding wheel. and I think the bearings are gone making a funny noise.
Now heres the breakdown of the grinder.
I spent all day pulling it apart. Lots of WD40 and even more rust.
    thoroughly enjoyed stripping her apart.
    heres some photos.

    Default Strip down

    Hi all.
Thanks J.C. for the info about the strip down and the info about GMF.
Before i stripped her down, thought Id start her up.
She started but only when i turned the grinding wheel with my hand.
she was also making a noise that sounded like the bearings were gone.
Then began the stip down. ALOT of WD40 and even more rust .
Slow going and it took all day to pull her apart.
The capacitor was rusted through and the bearings were open so they needed changing.
    Heres a few photos.

Thanks for the Info J.C. itll com i handy for the strip down

    Default Parts needed

    HI all
As I stated in the last post the Capacitor was rusted through and the grinder only started to turn when I spun the grinding wheel.
Upon further you tube research, it has become apparent that the Capacitor needs changing.
Any one In the big world of the internet know what sorta capacitor size and numbers I need for this grinder.
Ive already managed to score 2 brand new double shielded bearings for this project.

On A different note. I wanted my grinder to be complete when I finished restoring her.
I noticed that a lot of people out there had 8" GMF Bench grinders with no Covers on them and also that they didn't have the spark Arrestors or the safety eye shields.
I was wondering if they were lying around if you would part with them. If you would I would love a reply. If not id also appreciate a point in the direction of someone you know that might.

Any ways Thanks for reading this msg would appreciate any and all input on this project.

    Hi GS,

    Welcome to the forums.

The capacitor data should be printed on it. If its unreadable I'm sure someone will chime in with the value that you need.
    Best Regards:

Default AUSSIE made Rust removal product OZZIE OZZIE OZZIE

    Hi All.

Couldn't sleep so been on the net again lookin at all the methods of rust removal that dont involve soooo much elbow grease .Plus no more flap disks and my wire wheels are on their last legs.

Came across this AUSSIE product called RUST BUCKET by a company called action. For once im pleased to say were sticking it to the big fellas Like rusoleum and metal rescue. and best of all its about half the price. It is a granular form, that you mix water to but the video demo they had in their wearhouse kicked ass. About 2 hours and the rusty bit of steel was lookin like a Spanka.
BEST of all is the paint store up the street stocks it. So as soon as I have my coffee and ham and cheese toastie tomorrow morning im gonna go buy me some and support the AUSSIE made product.

Also Ive always wanted to see if you can re use this stuff(rust removal liquid).... that'ill have to be another thing to remember to do
Any ways pic below is the product.
Will post more pics of the before..... and after "Rust Bucket"

It's MSDS says Rust Bucket con EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) which is an industrial strength chelating agent type rust remover. It is indeed very safe and quick but unfortunately expensive. While it takes longer, plain Vinegar or citric acid (also chelating agents) will produce the same effect for significantly less $$. One problem with all these is they leave iron based surfaces unprotected especially if they are washed with water and left standing around so they will quickly rust. Instead of washing I recommend blowing dry with compressed air. This does not last for long (depends on environment) but it lasts longer than if the derusted item is washed.

If you are going to paint the derusted object then 10%+ Oxalic acid is also quick and when blown dry leaves behind a protective coating that will last for months. Oxalic acid is used extensively in heavy industry as an anti corrosive treatment. It is slightly toxic so gloves should be worn while handing this stuff. 2kg of oxalic acid powder costs about $30 from Bunnings where its sold as Diggers "Rust and stain remover". Looking around I managed to get 1kg for ~$10 on ebay. Its also very good at getting stains out of wood.

That's ferrous Oxalate - if you are going to paint over it then just leave it there - brush/wipe off any loose stuff.
You could sand it or wire brush off if you wanted to.
If you want bare metal then I would recommend using vinegar instead of the diggers rust removal.

just wanted to say i didnt use the rust bucket... my paint shop didnt have it in stock bummed out about that but i did take BobL advice and use the diggers rust removal.
forgotnto take photos but the parts came out really good.
Im painting it tomorrow.... today..... if the weather holds up. will post some photos when its done.
BTW Hammered bronze was the closest i could get to the original colour.
the local paint specialist said its probobly weathered.... thats why its darker?
anyways i think if it turns out i might paint all my refurbs HAMMERED BRONZE. Itll be my thing

    Default So its all Painted....

    Hi all.
    So my baby's all painted.
I dont know if the Dulux Hammered Bronze is the exact colour but its done now and if i decide to change it later well i guess i have to find the original GMF colour.
I noticed that the dome nuts that held the body together were made from brass so i broke out the dremel and polished those up. They came out a treat.
NOTE TO MY SELF... when ploshing small things keep a tight hold on them as they can get flung a looooonnnggg distance away as i found out
will do the assembly in a weeks time when the paints had time to fully harden. I learned this from a previous experience
Anyways heres the photos as it is now.
Any body have any ideas about where i can get Alluminium Tags made this ones a bit rough want to get a new one made up. post a comment if u know any one.
