So the day had finally come. Time to put the crane into the shed. For the last few days have been straightening the crane rails and making sure they are parallel and exactly 10.970 m apart. Eventually all 112 hook bolts are in and tightened and I'm happy its as good as I can make it.
The plan was to get the 35 tonne crane to lift the big planer off the truck first. At 14 tonne for the planer bed alone and with not much room it was always going to be tight. Had to make some lifting bars and collars as the crane company didn't have any!
The last few days have had some sleepless nights about all the things that could go wrong. It won't fit (even though I had measured it many times) or we drop something or we lose control and it crashes into the shed. So in some ways it was nice that the day had finally come.
Best to just let the pictures do the talking

Sorry some of the pictures are on there side but I don't know how to fix that.
Anyway all went smoothly and the crane fitted perfectly.
Tried to move the planer to its final position with the 12 tonne forklift but that was a no go so will skate it into position tomorrow. I finally think I'm over the worst and mostly down hill from here

Glad to see that the end is insight for you. Now all that's needed is the rest of the roof and some doors, hope that the weather is calm for those few days to do them.

Thanks Kryn
I have actually taken 2 weeks off to try and break the back of it. Once I move the planer can start on the last bay of the roof. Then the remaining side wall and walkway between the two sheds. Will have to move some of the bigger machines in before doing the end wall and door. Getting close though.

Thanks.
Skated the planer into position today and moved in the first SIP jig borer. Will hopefully finish the roof this week then will move in the slideway grinder and the mitsui seiki borer. I need to move them into place before the end wall goes in. They have been under covers for a long time so looking forward to them seeing the light of day.
Once the shed is finished I will try to profile some of the more interesting machines ( jig borers,Moore jig grinder, circular and linear dividing engines, planers,Churchill slideway grinder etc). For those those who are as interested in vintage machining and measurement as me, I hope some might find it interesting.
Will post more build photos as I go

Hi Mark,
Looking forward to seeing it all together.
Not sure if I've missed it, but are you going to make a business out of machining/grinding machines etc etc?
I don't need any work done but was just interested in your long term goal with all these great huge machines.Using Tapatalk

Thanks Mark, have watched your progress throughout, and been super impressed, and yes would love to see more details of all of your gear! Planers and jig borers! Super interested! Very impressed with your work, and thanks for sharing.

Hi Dave
Not looking to start a business. This will be my retirement hobby. Have some large stationary engines, tractors and vintage engineering equipment to restore over the coming years. It’s just been a bit of a passion for a few decades and I somewhat naively thought ‘how hard can it be to build a proper shed for all these machines’ . I have now answered that question.....hard and expensive. But once finished it will be a great space to work in.
Cheers

Looks like a really good job of the shed, however I have discovered a serious flaw in the photo's. It is not big enough, because I have found, after awhile they never are.

Wow Mark that's definitely an accomplishment I love it.
How the years fly by, I remember back in 2017 you letting me tag along with that adventure it's a great memory. I will have to come visit when the slide way grinders grinding.BETTER TO HAVE TOOLS YOU DON'T NEED THAN TO NEED TOOLS YOU DON'T HAVE

Time for a shed update. have been working hard trying to get the shed finished.
IMG_2426.jpg Finally got the roof over the last bay. Its a great feeling when you can finally get down off the roof!!
IMG_2428.jpg
IMG_2429.jpg
IMG_2430.jpg Then it was time to make the beam for the sliding door to hang off. The door is roughly 5m x 5m so pretty heavy. I had some thick walled 150 x 100mm RHS hanging around so used that. I wanted it to be as dust proof as possible so it became a bit more complicated than normal but worked out well in the end.
Cheers

Wanted to move a few machines in before I closed in the end wall. Had to move the slotter and baby Kearns borer so I could get to the Churchill slideway grinder and Mitsui seiki jig borer first. A slow and delicate process.

IMG_2433.jpg
IMG_2434.jpg Only took one photo of loading the slideway grinder because I was a tad nervous. But Franna loaded it easy.
