Hercus 9C H-drive v-belt change?
Another newbie question: How do I change the secondary drive v-belt on an H-pattern Hercus 9? Do I need to use a non-continuous A35-equivalent? Seems like both upper and lower shaft have no way, aprart from complete teardown to slip a v-belt on. Or am I missing something obvious?
As a BTW, the new motor has arrived and I installed it this morning. The machine lives! Hooray! Not to provide a proper start/stop box and I'll be happy. Maybe even install a tacho...

You will need to either pull the Headstock spindle and counter shaft spindle (not a bad thing, can check bearing surfaces ) or fit a suitable A size link belt.

Not much effort for the counter shaft as long as it's in good nick, just check for burs or bruises on the ends of the shaft and where the grub screws seat.
The Head Stock spindle can also be a pretty easy removal procedure as long as the Bull Gear is not overly tight on the spindle.
Remove the take up nut and fibre washer, loosen the bearing housing bolts, give the gear train end a hit with a bit of hardwood and hammer, it should start to move, the Bull gear will be on a key, in the bottom of the bearing housings will be felt and a spring, if you are concerned that you may damage them, bring a point onto a couple of bits of welding rod or similar, remove the side oil points, you should then be able to pull the felt and spring down with the pointed end of the rod, you really only have to worry once the bearing journals on the spindle have cleared the bearing housing, replacement is just the reversal after things are cleaned.
Mark the spindle where the keyway is so you can line it up with the Bull Gear.
Dont lose the key.
