Kmart Spanners
I was going through my fathers old tools and found an almost complete set of Kmart combination spanners, I didn't realise Kmart actually had their own brand of tools. Has anyone else seen sets like these ?

Rick,
I suspect Kmart just had a range of spanners etc stamped with their name by the overseas manufacturer. I know many years ago Montgomery Ward (long gone) did the same thing, but that was for the USA market, maybe your set was from Kmart USA but being metric, less common there, but not unusual. I remember when KMart had their own brand of ammunition. I can still remember, vividly, as a proud 12 year old, walking out of the store in Nowra Fair with my first .22 and a packet of bullets that I had saved up for while working on a building site for the Christmas holidays.

I've never seen them before, but just googled them and there's an imperial set on eBay here in Australia https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RARE-VIN...-/223598750272 and there is a rougher set of 5 on there too. I agree with C-47 in that Kmart were probably getting a company to make tools for them and have their own brand on them 'Kmart'. They must have had a variety of tools made as here's a Torque wrench still in it's original packaging on eBay USA https://www.ebay.com/itm/383246848483 .

I have a 15mm ring/open end spanner branded “Kmart”, it’s not a bad quality spanner, I wouldn’t mind having a full set for home use.

K Mart in the seventies was much better store than it is is now.
Spanners like were just some of the wonderful automotive and other buys I had there.
I had some Kmart spanners at first.
K mart had those and a huge amount more.
USA made Xenon distributor timing light.
USA made electronic exhaust gas analyser
USA made Cylinder Compression gauge
A dual signal torque wrench- Ok that was Taiwan made
Sidchrome flare nut spanners
Sidchrome spanners and sockets and those odd u shaped ones that went around starter motor.
Sidchrome iddy bitty open ignition nut spanners (a set) tight down to 1/8" AF.
A 12v battery long forgot the brand-that would start my HK V8 station wagon-that I could lift with 2 fingers.
And my first rifle a German Voere .22
It broke my Diy heart when K Mart went the really crap tool route.
Man! if I had only saved the money I spent on cars and tools and invested it, I would be sitting pretty now.

Wouldn't we all, I remember back in the seventies I had a xp falcon being stupid as you do at that age I nudged a stobie pole and put a dent in the front guard, I said to myself I can fix that, two years later it came out the shed with
351 Windsor v8 conversion mustang suspension 10" wheels (10" was wide back then) re done interior etc. etc. $14,000 spent (that was a lot back then) then for some stupid reason 3 months later I sold it and started another one, then another one, looking back I know where all my money went, but I must admit they were all "chick magnets"

3/8 and 1/4 drive socket set, metal case, made in Japan. Bought KMart Townsville early 70s. I also have a Taiwan made drill press from KMart about the same time. It has given excellent service.

Summer of 1975-76 I purchased a 69 piece metric tool kit from McEwans Bourke street store in Melbourne. I needed a metric kit as all of my vehicles were metric. Open end spanners from 6mm through to about 24mm. Ring spanners 6mm through to about 26mm. Sockets from 6mm to 24mm Ignition spanners 4mm to 10mm. All of the spanners are drop forged chrome vanadium and made in Japan, to say they are excellent is an understatement.
They did some serious work for close to 30 years and with the exception of the 10mm open ended spanner, which received heaps of work, they are all very unmarked and still work almost as good as when first purchased. The only other set of tools that have done similar work and come out as good, is a small Stahlwille set
Two ball pean hammers, top quality Peterson vice grips and so on in the general tool kit at the bottom of the folding out steel toolbox. Speed braces and various ˝" drive extensions from small through to around 300mm long, plus a universal jointed drive piece. It was a dream come true for me. It was serious quality and the price was cheap(ish)
I still have every tool in that kit and the box it came in; they are just housed in a rolling toolbox these days.
Mick.
