Default Elliot / Progress 5e kinda just fell in my lap!

Hi all firstly huge thanks for the amount of info you all share here! After losing my whole workshop in a fire late last year I've found myself ending up here nearly daily as i hunt for a replacement drill press.
And I've learnt alot! My old Taiwan number did a good job and continues to now as a rusting plant stand in the yard :/
I have been looking at a waldown or servian lately (thanks to you! )
But as luck would have it (i think) I've got the chance to take a progress 5e home for all of $0 !
Its in pretty good condition and has been stored well and am led to believe it works fine.
It's a step up that's for sure and from the info I've gathered im all for it.
There's just a few things, does anybody have a clue what these weigh? Strangely i can't find that info...
Im hoping it's not the end of the world to remove the machine head itself from the pedastal and possibly break it down further for transport.

And the big one it's 3 phase of course with a 3-5 motor (im assuming that's 3.5 hp) .
I've hunted high and low to find out just what would be involved (both cost and effort) to convert it to use a single phase motor but im getting nowhere.
If anyone has any info/suggestions they could make id be really grateful.

I want to bring this beauty back to great condition and do some restoration and have ny heart set on it but if a single phase conversion isn't an option for a beast this size then that dream ends here i guess.

Im hoping it can be done though and i can document the process here rather than being a newbie info leach 😉

    Cheers
    Brett

Have a look in the Electronics Sub forum for VFD, provided the motor can be modified to run star I think it is, you'll be able to run it of the 240V via the VFD. Best part is that you'll have variable speed which you don't normally get.
If we had a photo of the inside of the cap where the wiring comes in, someone else with more experience would be able to help.

If it's free that is a heck of a lot of drill press

As Kryn mentioned the old motor may be able to be rewired to run off a VFD, say $200 for a VFD to suit
If the motor can't be not the end of the world, can always fit another motor to that one. Probably similar costs.

    If it's something like this
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/311652076560
You can see in one of the pics it's got 220/440 so should be able to run off a 240v VFD, if the one you are looking at is similar you should be all good.

Got no real idea on weight but I'd be expecting it to be around a ton just looking at that pic, certainly wouldn't expect it to be lightweight.

Correct it is which that unit is. My partner works for a demolition company and its there so not to much hassle breaking it down into smaller 'cough' more manageable pieces. At least the whole drive head should come off the pedastal support and probably the foot too. .....now getting that drive head back on once home will be the fun part.
Luckily my landlords benefitted in the new garage built after the fire and the roof is a good 300mm Higher than standard. ...haha because the builder when measuring took into account my dexion racking height 👍
Technically we should have enough height for a flatbed with a small lifting crane to back in and do it
    It's a hell of a press....but how could i say no!
Thanks so far for the info guys.
This is going to take some time so in the meantime I've dug up a not to scruffy waldown type 2m which can be my ready to use unit in the meantime...not bad for a slab of beer 😉

It indeed does have 240/440 on the motor housing! I've just been reading up on vfd's which i knew off but stupidly hadn't put two and two together! Thanks to you and kbs-pensnmore for that nugget of info....really appreciate it!

And master spoon you can pick between the cigar or gold star on the guesstimated weight, she will tip the scales at just over 1100kg !

I have to ask is it normal to be so Damn excited and all consumed at this point when it comes to something like this? Haha i got scowled at at about 2am trawling the Internet for info on the 5e last night.
I guess it is normal so I'll hold off on DP's anonymous for now. I know watching the bulldozer go through 20 years worth of tools, parts etc etc following the fire destroyed my soul. I guess planning something like this can be as equally intense but in a positive way .

    Thanks again u guys rock!

    Geez, talk about being lucky!!!
2 pieces of top quality equipment for nix and a slab, I'll give you 2 slabs for one of them???
You should be able to get hold of an engine lifter to take the DP off a trailer, no need for a flat top then.

    Hi Kryn,

That 5E weighs well over a ton, about 25 cwt, I would hate to try and lift it with an engine crane !

I have a 5E. "A real man's drill press!" I moved it in two pieces. Head, and Base / column / table (without table - the round bit). Workshop crane on 500Kg picked up each piece. 900Kg 6x4 trailer carried each bit. Three phase supply, so no problems there. 5MT taper from memory, so you will need adaptors for anything less than a 2" drill or so!

    Good luck.

    Hi Guys,

The one that a friend of mine has doesn't have a round table ! His is rectangular and moves like an XY table but doesn't have handwheels.
There is a lever at the front that you move to unlock it and then just slide the table back and forth until the workpiece is under the drill. Then move the lever to lock the table again.

Next time I visit his workshop I'll take some pictures of it.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.
