    Thumbs up Scrapyard Gold !

    Hi Guys,

You wont believe what I've just come home with, acquired for the enormous sum of £10.00p. Yes ten whole UK pounds.
Here are the pictures to prove it !

I'm so chuffed ! A genuine Mitutoyo 0.0005 digital gauge with 1" inch travel, complete with an adjustable precision stand, in almost perfect condition. But boy is it heavy, it must weigh at least 10 lbs.

    Hi Guys,

I couldn't get my wallet open fast enough, even the moths were blinking

I had a search around on the Mitutoyo web site but couldn't find these, so I phoned and spoke to a couple of very helpful ladies.
I was told that the gauge was still available and would cost £185.oop plus vat, and the stand was no longer made and had been replaced by a 7010 model at a cost of £448.oop plus vat. I also discovered that the new stand only had a 7/8" diameter column, where as the one I got is 1.250" inches diameter.

They are also going to send me copies of the user manuals for these instruments along with some educational information.

Thank you for your support, its very much appreciated !

I reckon that's a dam good swap, 10 pounds for 10 lbs of "SCRAP".
Beautiful looking piece of hardware, wish I could find stuff like that.

    Hi Guys,

It was just sheer chance that I called in to my local scrap yard and went nosing into a skip that had just been unloaded prior to emptying. There it was just inside the lip. I didn't bother to look any further, I just grabbed it and went round to the office to ask how much. The chap on the desk just looked at it and me ! "£10, allright" No way was I going to argue... Would you !

I scarpered as fast as my legs could carry me !

The only other cost was an LS44 battery, out of the pound shop for five of them.
    Yes I'm very chuffed

John, you definitely have a higher class of scrapyard than I have available to me.
Not that I can complain, yesterday at the tip shop at The South Hobart Tip, nearby to my Daughter, SIL and two grandsons home and for Au$10.00 for each item, I bought two books and a DeLonghi dehumidifier. The books were a circa 1986 edition of The Whole Earth Catalogue, and a facsimile copy of volumes 1 and 2 of The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, titled Australia, The First Hundred Years. The W.E.C is a bit full on in parts for an 11 year old, with some explicit pages dealing with sex and giving birth etc and will be ok when he is a few years older, but in the meantime he loves history, and the articles on Australian history from contemporary voices together with the hundreds of engravings will keep him going for some time, so that book will be a winner from the moment he sees it I think.
The dehumidifier will be for my workshop container while we are away during the winter, and should help keep the rust at bay.
Back to your Mitutoyo treasure, you were fortunate that no damage was done whilst in the skip, the dehumidifier has a few scars from its time in a skip I would say, nothing too bad and most has been cleaned up with a rub over with Jiff and a sponge, the rest would come out with wet and dry followed by a polish, but for workshop use it will be fine.

    Hi Ropetangler,

Those DeLonghi dehumidifier's are quite good ! The issue with them, and why they get thrown away is the dust that gets sucked into the heat exchanger and blocks it. Basically stops the air flow so it doesn't work very well.

They are easy to clean, but you do need to strip it down. Remove the case, the fan and its motor, but you will need to take care to protect the electrics really well, then you pressure wash the heat exchanger from the opposite side to the fan. This will force all the dust and muck out.

Once clean it will work properly again. Don't forget to the clean the filter as well, though they are easily removed for cleaning.

    HTH.

Thanks for the tips John, while it does work as is, I will take your advice and give it a going over. It does have a slight musty odour when working in a small room, so I was already thinking that it might have had dust issues.
