    Default Making high quality inserts

I found this video in my inbox and thought others may find it interesting. These days I think we take these inserts for granted, but the amount of work and manual inspection that's involved is surprising. It probably also reflects the difference between high quality and "other" inserts.

Ignoring all the high tech equipment and quality control measures the manufacture of inserts seems to be much simpler than I had assumed.

Thanks Pete. Absolutely amazing. I can't believe how labour intensive it is to make these little things!

There were two Hard Metal plants post 1970 but have since closed.

    1. The Mayfield, Newcastle site was originally a joint venture between BHP and Seco Tools Sweden.
They processed Scheelite concentrate, initially from King Island, to the finished product and marketed Seco Tools products ( inserts and toolholders) and owned a Subsidiary in Taiwan (Titan Taiwan).
Own manufactured products were, Wear Parts, Mining Tools, Brazed Tools Heavy Alloys for the Military, with over 40 Tonnes produced annually.
The Scheelite plant closed in 1986 and Tungsten Metal powders were sourced through Seco Tools. There were no coating plants in operation
BHP exited the JV in 1988, selling its share to Sandvik Australia who merged the operation with Sandvik Hard Materials and moved the the Dandenong Plant and equipment to the Mayfield site. Seco Tools move their marketing activities to Sydney.

    2. The Sandvik HardMetal plant in Dandenong purchased finished Tungsten Carbide powders and pressed/sintered Wear Parts and Carbide Blanks.

The Mayfield Plant closed the production facility in 2013 and moved the plant to India.

I am not aware of any other plants in Australia.

That's really interesting, thanks for the reply, I remember reading about the scheelite being mined on king island but didn't know they were actually processed here.
