    Default H&F Ring Roller

Bought one of these a few years back for hobby use, served its purpose until today. While rolling some light gauge round, there was a resounding crack, the free roller appeared to be bending on its shaft. Inspection found that the main part of the whole device, that is, the adjustable roller that is controlled by a movable threaded screw sits in a plastic of some sorts housing. Un-believable, a part that will take considerable strain when rolling metal is in fact plastic. Its not bin fodder, a challenge to make a new part out of metal. So, anyone contemplating of buying one of these, take a magnet with you and see if that part I am describing is still plastic, it it is dont bother or be prepared to make yourself a new part.

you realy have to wonder why they would use plastic in a part like that .
i made my own ring roller last year its all metal and was a fun project cos i had to cut some gears ( thats always fun ) and its pretty heavy duty , never did put any pics of that jigger in the forum maybe i rekoned it would be a bit ho hum for all the machinists in here .
why would you use plastic for that part surely the cost saving would be bugger all compared to how much better it could be made .

And yes, why would you make a part like that from plastic rather than metal.

Johno, love to see some pictures

I think they make it from plastic so you dont overload it... and yes my H&F branded roller broke in about 3 seconds, was very disgusted with it and its still sitting where it got thrown too

The instruction's say SFA about how to use it without breaking the POS

The reason is that the manufacturer can and does, substitute cheaper sub standard components and pocket the savings with any regard for the reseller or the end user.

We all know where it comes from and then, thats only from certain no name manufacturers. I think time has come to adhere to some manufacturing standard for the makers . something along the lines of JIS and 9001/9002.

I have an almost identical unit and that particular component is ferrous . Mine came from Ozemestore the metal thickness capacity is only 3mm and it limits the tool quite a bit.
