Yes, that may be so, but his trees practically grow overnight.

The dam weir is around 4 or 5m high - so that would be the total head.
The dam when full is nearly 10km long. I had a look through the historic imagery on Google Earth and saw one showing the weir over flowing. It would take a lot of time to run it down with the little turbine, I would think. But then the oil engine would take over I imagine.....
The property was orignially owned by the Chirnside brothers Andrew and Thomas (I did a little reading on early history today).
Thats amazing. 5M dam height would produce about 50 Kpa pressure which is not much to play with but when the dam is that big, the turbine would be fed with high volume, low pressure.

I'm going to have a look on google too. You got me interested!

What amazing achievements from those two brothers!

Lots on the net about the CHirnside family. I found this regarding the property in question:

Default Interesting visit to a farm today....

That big horizontal open crank engine, looks like a hit and miss I helped unload at the Wandin draft horse festival on Friday ready for the show over the weekend. They could use any heavy distillate from kero to crude oil to run due to the Hvid or Brons system (Fuel vaporising system or hot bulb ignition). This made it cheap and easy for farmers to run them.

That shed and probably other parts of the farm should be given heritage listing.

P.s. Looks like from the link above it already has.

If I owned it, you'd get it listed over my dead body.

I doubt you have any idea just how much hassle a heritage listing of anything causes the property owner. Down here, you can't even replace old short sheet galvanised iron with continuous lengths of zincalume unless you can prove that the original type, length and profile of material is unavailable. Let's not even get into colours.

The entire heritage listing system is broken. The listing body should have to take total financial responsibility for maintenance of the thing listed or STFU.

Read Simons post (post 18). It is listed and the conditions PDW refers to are listed as well.
