Hi Dave, Eskimo
Thanks for the drawing much appreciated, I'll make a couple of them, once you get set up it's just as easy to do an extra. (An extra for the iceman)
The mill is still in pieces, I'm trying to get the new spindle bearings sorted out before I put it all back together.
The AC bearings I wanted to use on the Zaxis ballnut bearing are not readily available and the price looks like it might be way more than I was thinking, so I'm going back to the design version that used the VXB bearings.
Here is my question, when designing for AC bearings (that are not stacked back-to-back), how does the contact angle affect the spacing between the bearings?
Regards
Ray
Edit: Don't know why it's so quiet, maybe they are all busy machining stuff..

I really don't think it matters.
As far as I know you can have them as far apart as needed, but you should use a spacer between the inner and outer of the 2 bearings to stop over preloading them when in use. Bridgeport's are not back to back, they have a spacer between them.

If you use spacers between angular contact bearings you can give them a bit of preload... Angular contacts that are to be used as a pair use the DU suffix to say they are a matched pair..
My bridgeport clone mill just has generic non precision AC bearings for spindle bearings... I lapped I think it was the inner spacer a smidgen to give the bearings some preload.. It seems to have worked as the mill seems to be more rigid, although I also scraped some of the mating parts to give a better bearing as well, and replaced a few other bearings with less clearance bearings...

Interesting, does that mean that some progress has been made or has life got in the way. I have just acquired a HM53VG.
Will potentialy end up doing a Cnc conversion at some point

At this stage, I haven't looked into it at great detail, but I'm tempted to say just the quill. That will probably do what I need it to do most of the time.
If it doesn't, re indexing the height of the table with the knee will likely get me through for the rest.
If if I get to the point where it's limiting me that would be a great problem to have.
