No worries - it can be a confusing topic.
i am going through this same issue i think.
Have a QCTP AXA 250-111
My mars lathe has a bolt to hold old tool post down.
This bolt is to large for the QCTP.
I only had 5 minutes to look at it yesterday so not sure on sizes or anything.
But would i be better off changing bolt or boring QCTP ?
Thanks
Daniel
Change the bolt/stud.
hi, so I bought now an AXA 100 QCTP from M&G in Melbourne - so yes, I have to make a new stud with Imperial thread, which I cannot do myself on my Metric Hercus, so its either buying a gearset to do so, or find a lathe where I can machine one for me. Either choice is not gonna be easy, but anyhow, i gotta solve that.
More importantly, the indexing plunger cannot be used on my QCTP, it hasnt got any holes for it, neother is there any space to drill them in, but would be just pushed down by the QCTP, why did you take it out and how do you get the QCTP now square to the chuck? You align the tool somehow?
Thank you very much
If I need to get the toolpost square to the chuck, like when I am parting off, I leave it loose and move the carriage to the left so that a face of the TP block is up against a flat surface of the chuck. Then tighten it.
Okay - thanks a lot for the tip. Sounds reasonable. I probably have to develop a process for this when I actually get to using all this.
But could you also please enlighten me why you took that index plunger out? It might pop up when you turn the QCTP, but then you could press it lightly down and turn the QCTP all the way? I see I guess when I get there.
And also - All I need is the correct imperial thread die and turn the stud to the correct diameter - and done. no threading required
cheers
Werner
I didn't need to remove the index spring plunger. It will work OK with it still in place - just as a system I find it a bit annoying.
To cut your threads, using a die might work, as long as you guide it with a tailstock mounted holder to ensure accuracy.
Or maybe someone here could make a stud or stud+sleeve for you.
For example, Pipeclay does bits for Hercus lathes.
I try to get it done - but thanks for the offer and idea - I'll keep that in mind
I m bit confused tho - did you not state in reply #4, and I quote: " ... The Spring loaded indexing plunger was removed by tapping out from underneath...."
That made me think you have no indexing plunger anymore, sorry. I misunderstood.
Sorry, I should have said, "I didn't need to remove the plunger, but I did anyway because it was annoying."
