Sheraton Lathe
Hi,
A first post from a new member of the forum.
My 9 inch Sheraton Model A appears to be a clone of South Bend and Hercus.
Unsure of the history, but it has had a hard life and is in need of some repairs.
Anyone else out there operating a Sheraton ?
Am I able to post inside the Hercus Forum as various parts appear, at face value, to be inter-changeable ?
Worst problem is the headstock bearing - TIR of 0.003 inch and noticeably rough finish on the spindle bearing surface when inspected through the shim slot.
The spindle appears to run directly in the headstock housing (no bearing liner).
I have convinced myself that the bad bearing contributes to the poor finish on 1020 grade steel using HSS tools.
Free machining steel like 12L14 is no problem.
Any advice on pulling the spindle for a complete inspection ?
Happy machining,
John.

My Father in Law has one of those lathes and I have seen him use it (works very well)... was bought from a tech School when the Govt in Victoria closed them all down a few years back.
Sorry can't help you with anything but I at least know what you are talking about.
Cheers,
Chipman

I'm sure you'd be made more than welcome in the Hercus forum John.
Check out this document on adjusting the bearings

Sheraton Lathe
Hello John,
I bought some lathe parts last year that could be Sheraton. I have not been able to find a similar lathe to compare it with but it looks quite like some photos of a Sheraton on the lathes.UK website. All the parts are new and some have not been finish machined. I intend to put together an entire lathe as I got most of the bits and have been aquiring the missing parts since. If there are any small parts you need I may be able to help.
Cheers,
Glenn
