Hercus 260 Metal Lathe
Hello,
I am a new member, I have just purchased a Hercus 260 Metal Lathe (model ATM). I was wondering if someone has got a pdf copy of the "textbook of turning" for this model, or any other user/parts manual for this machine. Hope someone can help.
Cheers!

Hi Mark,
Congratulations and welcome the "Hercus Club".
There is some more info here on the 260 www.lathes.co.uk
Scroll down to Hercus-Aus, and wallah.
I believe Axmel, in SA still support the 260.
If you want to talk Hercus out of hours, send me a PM.

Thanks for your reply Grahame & Ken.
I have downloaded the manual per the link in Grahame's post. I have been informed by Axmel that their is a new book that relates to the 260 model (where the link is for the 9" model).
Thanks again,
Mark

You could try Mick Moyle's in Summer Hill, Sydney.
http://www.moyles.com.au
He has a lot of parts for the 9" Hercus but might have some bits to suit the 260. When I was in there last Thursday, he had a book for the 260 in a cabinet. Can't remember if it was a parts list or what but might be worth a call.
Cheers,
Findlay.

I was at Micks on Monday. He had 2 Hercus 260 machines for sale. They looked to be in very good nick. The Hercus cabinet was full, but I wasn't looking for paper so didn't notice if he had a manual.
Give him a call and he will send it to you if he has one.

Re pick gears or quick change gearbox
Got a Hercus 260 CTM (17512) which is the basic metric model,
When I bought it off EBAY it did not have a tail stock or tool post, So I made a 4 way tool post, converted a Boxford tailstock to right hight and made it adjustable for taper turning, Also had to put a new 240 volt motor in place of the 3 phase.
Disabled the revers switch because sometimes if the chuck is not locked up tight they can spin off ( disaster)!!!!.
Now all I need is a set of change gears or a Quick change gearbox.
Can anybody help me with this, Mick Moyles in Sydney does not have any right now.
The lathe works just fine although It has only one chuck for the moment,
Ime getting two mounting plates machined for two other chuck Ive got, because the cost of buying new ones from Hercus is a bit steep.
Why am I doing all this. (1) Ime old and silly (2) given up makeing snooker cues on the wood lathe, Its cheaper to buy from Rebel Sports, (3) I want to start makeing model IC engines. (4) It stops my missus from makeing me work in the garden.

jomac6,
Have a word with pipeclay re change gears, a little bird tells me he may know where a few are for sale, if not, he might be able to point you in the right direction.
