    Default Lathe advice required

I have a tractor/loader/backhoe etc which like most things requires regular maintenance.

One of the problems in the bushing in the front bucket and back hoe.
They get loose and need to be replaced regularly.

They cost quite a bit so that and other things around the place are making me think about getting a lathe.

Not for big stuff but smaller (up to 50mm or so) bushings, threads and general bits and pieces. (Also a new toy.)

I am looking at one on EBay . Is it worth it or should I go for a smaller one.

Would like to be able to cut 3.5mm thread for the Vicmark vl300 lathe.

David, you need to paste the correct link in, don't know what you did, but it's not the lathe you're talking about obviously.
    Cheers

Since you are in the ACT, you could try this one from Cabratec in Fyshwick

    http://www.carbatec.com.au/store/ind..._380_2460_2461

I don't think they keep stock on the floor though.

    Or you could try Gasweld

    David,
You could buy from fleabay but the bloke on the link you gave will only give a 30 day warranty. Its a new lathe for Chrsake not a second hand car.

While I never had a bad dealing with the man and have no reason to doubt his honesty, he is not good at answering enquiry emails.

Something small hey no problem, but when it shitz itself wher are you going to get the part you need. A good second hand job or Taiwanese are the go .

    David,

The lathe would most likely be capable of doing what you ask. But some thing with a bit more beef would be better.

The pins and bushes you want to change are fairly tough steel and a small lathe like the one pictured would have a hard time doing alot of them. I have spent many a time knocking in new pins and welding new bushes, but that was 30 years ago dunno what grade of steel they are using these days.

As to 3.5mm pitch threads most lathe would be capable of cutting such threads. Have a look at graysonline if you not in a hurry you should be able to get what you want second hand and at a good price.
