    Hi all,
    Here I am on my second project. I am building a petrol go kart for my 10 yrs old nephew this time. Hopefully I'll finish it by THIS christmas.

    I am using 30x30x1.6 galv tube, the arc blew a few holes on the first rod at 80amp. I changed it to 2mm electrode and set back to 60 amp and it seemed to be better. The trick is not to leave the arc gap too big and point the electrode to the corner of the tube where its "thinker"

    Looks good so far.

    Did you make all the steering parts yourself?

    What type of engine will you use?

    I made one a few years back and it had a two stroke motorbike engine and man was it fast.

    nice work mate looking forward t seeing it finished me n my mates built one at skool with a dodgey as steerin setup and before we put on the motor we took it for a test run down a step as hill lol i nearly died that day

    You're right about the arc lencth and the amperage. Gal is a pain to weld, also make sure you have ample ventilation. The fumes from the gal coating are toxic if breathed in.

    The project so far looks great. I'm with welder.man. Where did you get the steering components from. I would love to make a kart for my kids when they get a bit bigger so they can get a bit more skill before letting them into a car!

    Like the idea,gratefull for the welding tips. I made the entire frame for my side fence 2 metres high using gal 50 mm square,chose a solid wall thickness,felt a little light headed after all the frame welds,did not know about changing amperage and guage rods like that.

    Tell us about the proposed wheels,size of them,steering wheels braking thoughts,really fascinated by this.

    Hi all,

    Yes, I made all the steering bits myself, the nuts are from the car tie rod end and wheel nuts. Also I got someone cut the keyway on the axle for me as I dont get access to milling machine.

    I have 2 motors, one is 49cc, other is 40cc from homelite w/snipper. They both use the same clutch housing so i can swap them over if I want to.

    The gear ratio on the front and rear sprockets is 1/10. According to my calculations, the kart will be doing around 20km/h at 4000rpm.

    I am using disc brake with spring loaded caliper, let see if I can finish the adapter for it on the weekend when i get access to the workshop.

    By the way, here is another welding job for the exhaust. The plate is 5mm, the pipe is 1.5mm. I set the current to 90amp and electrode is pointing to the thick metal.
