Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is used to make natural soap - so aside from the fact that the boiling caustic solution will really rip into organics (great for cleaning badly burnt stainless steel saucepans), it's pretty safe (you also use sodium hydroxide in your dishwasher).

Parkerisng uses phosphoric acid...which is also found in Coca-Cola. The food safeness of Coke, I'll leave you to worry about.

Manganese is an essential trace element, and you are in more danger from an undersupply of it than from an occasional teapot handle licking.

Yes but its a "trace eliment" . I come from pottery. You know how the mad hatter was mad from lead poisoning. Well, they had mad guys in pottery too. The guy who shoveled the lead. And the guy who shoveled the manganese. So you prolly do need to be a little careful when using it. But you are prolly right about not dying from licking a tea pot handle.

When I was younger and stupider (I'd like to think that both things have changed, but...) I was reclaiming the zinc from dry cell batteries, This involved digging out the manganese dioxide from the inside. At one stage the old chisel I was using slipped through the thin casing and cut up my finger. I now have a permanent 'tattoo' on the end of my finger thanks to the black manganese dioxide. However, I can report I'm not dead yet.
