is it possible to idententifie this type of steel from others?
aaron
Sure!
Machine it. Its chalk and cheese compared to low carbon steel.
How different it is to, say 4130, I don't know.
I doubt you will find it in anything other than round, I have tried without success. Bohler sold me a cut length (1200mm if I recall correctly) of 100mm round. Cost a bomb.
I resorted to purchasing smaller lengths from Flea-bay. There's a guy down in Tassie supplying lengths at non-insane (but still expensive) prices.

I'm sure you're correct Karl but when you're presented with a poor array of choices for gathering 4140 you take the best offer available at the time.
Bohler shut up shop in Adelaide several years ago and Interlloy aren't interested in supplying small cut lengths to guys working in their back shed like me.
I've asked Atlas steels about cutting to length for a cash sale a couple of times and they haven't returned my emails.
The small local steel stores generally don't stock 4140, so supplier choices are very limited.
I could order from Bohler (Voestalpine)Melbourne but the freight cost will be a killer.

It is hard to understand how Adelaide, one of the bigger manufacturing places in Australia cannot supply 4140.
I have found most places who claim to be engineering steel suppliers generally stock either 1020 for mild steel and 4140 for high tensile. Then for stainless 304 or 316.
Anything other then that would be a special order, but if you ask for high tensile you will most likely get 4140, even if the salesperson has no idea what it is, other then a generic high tensile.
Supply is not the issue in Adelaide supply of short lengths is
I don't want to take out a second mortgage to buy a full length when I only need 200mm.
That's why I paid a premium to "old mate" in Tasmania.
Adelaide and manufacturing are not terms generally used in the same sentence these days. I have literally away days of my life I will never get back trying to find ‘engineering’ metals around Adelaide in cut to order, I don’t bother anymore it’s straight to the inter webs for an order, if that means paying a slight premium then so be it, it’s just the cost of doing business.
I'm amazed at the difficulties people are having. For once it seems like we have an easier time in Tassie. I guess minimum sale amounts come into play as well.
I have had reasonable success getting short lengths from machine shops, although you do need to be able to compromise on sizes and lengths as well as not putting pressure on the machine shop to drop what they are doing. I usually start by saying "I know I'm a pain in the @$%#, but I was wondering if you might have a bit of X, around Y long or something like it?" A few cans to lubricate the workings does wonders as well.
