surface grinder
Hi. Has anyone here ever made a surface grinder for metal, or seen one. A web search turns up nothing.

In case you missed it, the important part of the post is the words 'has anyone EVER MADE a surface grinder'.

Arron, Plough book sales sell a lot of books on making machines eg lathes, mills, drill press. I just thought they may have something on making a surface grinder since they have everything else!
Have a nice day - Cheers

Hi Arron,
If it is only castiron you can surface it on a radial arm saw bench with a bit of mucking about, years back we had some Barba-Q plates cast for us, We used a grinding cup wheel from the cutter grinder and mounted it on the saw useing the saw collars for support turn the head to the verticle position and set up the cast plate on the saw table, wedging to get it as close as possible to being paralell with the saw stroke, they took a bit of time to do but came up well,I think we had to turn up a washer to mount the grinding wheel. You set up the plate under the grinding wheel and move the arm left and right to get it dressed, Hope this helps a bit.

Not yet.
I'm thinking that some linear bearings, a cast off bench grinder with variable speed, some powered lead screws and a suds pump along with some shielding to keep the important parts dry might work, might not too.
It's not like a surface grinder is anything scary to build, just takes a little planning.

now thats not a bad idea, can you buy them variable speed or would you have to modify it? i figure all you need is something to do the grinding, either belt and contact wheel or a stone wheel and then a table to move the work under the grinder, that couldnt be to hard, its just like a mill table and then you need some form of height adjustment. maybe if the slidding bed was aluminium it would suck out enough heat that you dont even need water or oil cooling, and if need be you could quench it at either end.
Ive actually been thinking of building one for a couple weeks now but due to my poor skills i probably never will.
