Default Jack stands (Standing the test of time)

I was thinking about the jack stands I was using the other day.

    stand 5.jpg

I got these from my father about 10 years ago and I believe he had them since the mid 60's
He had a good friend who was a fitting and turning teacher at a Brisbane Technical College at that time. I'm pretty sure they were assessment projects for students.

Cast iron base and adjuster nut (probably from the pattern makers or foundry students), Heavy wall pipe, single start square thread and machined top piece.

    Stamped with the student details.

I bet Cross and Burgess never imagined their projects would still see regular use 60 odd years later.

Naturally no S.W.L. but over the years they have held up a multitude of vehicles. My dad's, my brothers and mine. Landrover, falcons holdens, datsuns etc.

    Has anyone seen similar units?

    John

    G’day John,
I got four stands of the same design from a bloke who wotked at Dawn in Coburg before they closed down.

I’ve had them for nearly thirty years and my dad had a near identical pair for as long as I can remember before that. Best jack stands ever.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

When I was teaching at high school, I tried to get the fabrication of jack stands added to the senior students metal fab list of projects.
This was knocked back as liability traced back to the school was a concern.

I dare say though the cast items were extremely well made I bet they disappeared as a result of liability issues.

I too,had a set of Dawn jackstands but they differed to the one shown as they had no wheel ,but used a set of down sloped wings to wind the threaded shank up and down.

My son borrowed them and they were never seen again.

    Don’t they still make these?

    Something very similar listed here:

Dawn has these still advertised and even shared an original brochure:

Unless they are not made to the same standards as a few decades ago?

I'm a bit of a jack stand tragic owning more than my share of these units.
The early ones as previously posted are by far the best and I have two pairs.
The units from the 70's & 80's were mostly junk and some could have been considered dangerous.

I believe the popularity of 4WD'ing helped improve the quality of stands.

The modern one that I like and also have 2 sets (picture attached) the unit with a quick rise and a screw infinite adjustment.
IMHO, they are probably the best suited for my old car needs.

There is also those toothed units with a quick release of which I have one pair and then finally, I could not help myself and bought a nice pair of toothed quick release units made from aluminium.

They are my favourite but dont have that screw adjustment that I really like.

For anyone interested, those SCA pin/screw 3000kg (per pair) adjustable jack stands are currently on special at $55 for a pair, down from $129.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

Sharing in case anyone is interested.

Someone selling a similar set in Melbourne for $55. I would have bought the set if it was closer to me.
