Default My Version of a Two Piece or Free Vice

Four years ago I posted a thread regarding modular vices which ended up drifting to Ludwig Gack's two piece shaper vice - https://metalworkforums.com/f65/t202...62#post1941462

Michael G went on to develop his version of the Gack that led to it being included in Hemingway Kits selection of machine vices. Michael with his typical generosity offered me a set of castings but there was a but, I had just started slicing up some cast iron for a DIY version so rather than be greedy I declined his offer.

    IMG_20220331_123913446.jpg

A feature I wanted to include in my vice was its ability to be mountable on both the 13 and the little Hercus No. O. The 13 has tee slots on 40mm centres and the 'O', 63.5mm. To achieve this I simply elongated to hold down holes. I then made some oblong washers to prevent the deformation of the cast iron hole edges that would occur when the vice was clamped down.

The vice body parts are Flowcast 4E cast iron, the jaws, 1020. the spigot, 1045 and the other bits are 4140. The feed screw thread is M16 x 2.

I keyed the 'fixed' jaw to suit the 13. The key is stepped because the 12mm cutter didn't cut a 12mm slot!!

And here's the vice stop shown in the photo of the vice at work on the 13.

    And finally my working drawing.

    Thank you John.

While that is a poor excuse for a drawing it is encouraging to hear that there are others still adhering to the now old fashioned pen and paper !!

I used to be able to use Sketchup but haven't used it for some time so I also still use pencil and paper.
Wish I could get my pencil based sketches to look a tenth as good as your though.

Anyone new to this forum viewing my scribble and your comment would think you should aim a bit higher !!!

There was a time when I think my drawings were probably a touch more presentable.....

Nice work as always Bob. Another one of those bits of kit that only gets occasional use but very handy when it does.

    Thank you Michael.

What has proven real handy and gets frequent use is the keyed fixed jaw. It provides a quick means of alignment for my growing collection of screwless vices.
