Rivnut/nutserts or what they're called
Now that I have almost reversed a built-in elect panel on my Kimberly Camper I want to make it easier to remove in the future instead of having to drill out pop rivets to gain access to the wiring.
Has any one got a GOOD (ie excellent) Rivnut tool? if so what make and model please....GOOD means you have used it many many many many times times times. eg several hundred settings
I want one that will do up to 12mm?...once I get it I will be expected to fix sons hard ute lid on his Malloo ute. (bloody stupid hinges are only screwed to sheet metal of tub.
My job is only 4 or 6 mm
TIA

I have a Textron, I think they still have an agent in Adelaide not sure.
None of the pop rivet puller style tools will pull M12 up properly even if they advertise they do.
Mine says M10 and 3/8 but it’s very very difficult to get them to pull up if you’re using decent ones.
M12 you can pull up with a flanged nut, bolt, spanner and rattle gun.
The other thing you may consider for your job is some nut plates like are used to hold instruments and whatnot into aircraft.
ANCHOR NUTS
They won’t break free after the round of corrugated dirt either
Edit After looking at a couple of pictures after posting, I have an Avdel, no matter, it came from Textron

I have this -
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/30094801...hantid=9333962
These will do stainless in 10 and 12mm quite well. There's even models that will do the stud type nutserts such as these.

I also have about five or six other types which will do a variety of smaller nutserts.Nev.

That’s a nice looking bit of kit Nev, is it hydraulic or does it just have big mobs of mechanical advantage?

Hi Guys,
I made a mandrel for my pop rivet tool. I used the largest diameter steel rod that would fit in the largest guide and threaded the rod end to suit the size screw I needed. I only made two mandrels, one for 2BA and one for 4BA. They work just fine. The only downside is that you have to remove the mandrel from the riveter to unscrew the mandrel each time. A bit of a pain if you are doing a lot of them. What I should have done is make the mandrel long enough to go right through the tool jaws and put a removable knob on the end !Best Regards:
Baron J.

No hydraulics. This video should explain how it works.

I've done a lot of nutserts with this tool and it's still as good a new. Always make sure to clean and lube the threads, thrust bearing and other parts occasionally.Nev.

I've used a similar tool and the time they save justifies the cost if you've got a lot to do. With a pull of the trigger it screws on, pulls & screws off. https://www.rivnut.com.au/products/t...ls/rfs-m312-2/

Richard,
I recently bought one of these to do larger sizes https://www.kincrome.com.au/nut-rive...-handle-68-pce (goes to M10)
seems to be well made and work alright; you are welcome to borrow it if you want to try.
I've had a smaller one for years (that I have used many, many times) and that is fine to M6 but lacks leverage (and mandrels) for larger sizes.

Thanks guys
the Avdel stuff seems way out of my budget...
Looks like a toss up with the ratchet type that surfin nev put forward and Michael's Kinchrome.
If I get from Bunnings they are pretty good with their warranty policy if its craps itself...the other possible benefit is if I can find it online cheaper they beat that price by 10% ...used that several times!

FWIW I've used a pop rivet style and the scissors action type nutsert tools and one thing you will (eventually) notice is the scissors type requires good access around the rivet point for these big handles to be able to spread out . This becomes a PITA in for example an internal corner situation.
OTHOH the scissors action do provide greater leverage so can do bigger outserts than the pop rivet style.

I have had a Kingchrome like Michael G has. Had it about two - three years. Used it up to M8, but mostly smaller sizes, and works well. At M8 I found the force required was "robust" or am I getting old! Handles could probably be longer. Fitting it into tight spaces is a problem, but with a bit of planning.....
I saw a youtube of one fabricated from basically a nut and bolt, when I was considering what to buy. Maybe adequate if you are only doing a couple of M12 rivnuts.

I have the Kincrome as well. Tried to do 10mm stainless a couple of days ago. Gave up and used the ratchet. Bad shoulders do not help.

I've been using a powered attachment which looks like a pop rivet tool to fit in a cordless drill or impact driver for about five years now, does all sizes from 3mm up to 12mm without any hassles.
Bought it on ebay years ago, from memory it cost about $30.

I ended up getting the Kinchrome kit. The 4mm mandrel worked a treat .....until I used a little too much force....ping. Still had a bit of thread left for a fourth set...ping. Went and bought a normal hand pop rivet style and finished job. I think the hand pop rivet style is best to use on the smaller sizes as you cant get force easily to snap the mandrel....
