Default Brierley drill grinder chuck size

Could anyone tell me what the diameter is of the 6 jaw chuck fitted to the Brierley ZB 25 and ZB 32 drill grinders?

    Hello Peter.
    I have a Z25 and I'm sure it's 75mm. I can measure monday if you like.

Thanks for your reply. I understand that the ZB25 takes a 1 inch drill through the chuck and a ZB32 takes a 1 1/4 inch drill. I am wondering if a 75mm chuck has a bore big enough. Perhaps a measurement of yours will shed some light.

    Cheers, Peter

I have a Spiramax, which appears to be the same as a Brierley.
    It is a 1/1/4 machine.
The 6 jaw chuck on it is 110mm OD and 33mm ID.

Thanks for your reply. Your Spiromax certainly looks to be very similar to a Brierley so probably a ZB32 would also have a 110mm chuck. I am on the track of a Brierley but I am not sure if it is a 25 or 32 having only seen a photo of it in a partly dismantled state. I will know when I get to have a look at it in a couple of weeks or so. What I do know is that the chuck is missing hence my query. Providing that not too much else of it is missing, grafting a 'foreign' chuck to it may be worth while, there seems to be a few six jaw drill grinding chucks of various sizes available. which could be adapted.

    Default Chuck size

    Hello again.
    Sorry I'm late it's a busy week.
I measured my chuck and it's 80mm. The bore just takes a 1" drill. A while ago I did a clean of a similar chuck on my form relief grinder and improved it's operation but not the accuracy.
Maybe adapt an ER32 collet chuck to get better concentricity.

Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion re an ER collet chuck could be a way around the lack of a suitable chuck but to do an inch drill it would have to be an ER40. I wonder if the closing nut size would pose a clearance problem when a small drill needs to be sharpened. There are both 80mm and 110mm 6 jaw drill sharpening chucks available new, which could be mounted either directly or via an adapter plate so it looks as if the lack of an existing chuck should not be a definite stopper.

    Cheers, Peter

You can machine a fair bit off an ER nut at least 3 mm on that outside corner to get a bit more clearance. Still won't be as good as the extended jaws I guess.

If you went the collet route you could also use a parallel shank collet chuck of a smaller size (eg ER16 or ER11) and put that in the ER40 to reduce the clearance issues when doing smaller drills.

    Default Drill grinder setup.

    Hello again.
You will have to be careful when changing the chuck. The drillgrinder is set up by bringing the drill forward to a setting gauge. This gauge is graduated in the drill diameter which in turn changes the stick out of the chuck. You will have to measure this before changing the chuck. Not having the correct cutting edge distance from the pivot point ruins the drill grind. My bad experience there, the manual is not easy to follow and my grinder was set up incorrectly. Had to re time the cam to the spindle.

Thanks for your information. i am leaning towards trying to find the correct 6jaw chuck. providing of course that there is not too much else missing, we will see!

Hi Peter, how did you go with your chuck.
I'm rebuilding a Zb25 now. Here's the dimensions of mine.

    Od 3.360"
    Through bore is 1.005".
Height to face of chuck is 1.730".
Height to jaw face is 2.700".
    Depth of register is 0.160"
    Diameter of register is 2.460"
Mine is a Burnerd and the part number is either BP69/37872, or 1658-09040.
Both these numbers are stamped on the face of the chuck.
    Cheers Alby.

Thanks for the information on your zB25. I have got hold of a manual from Griffith in the UK and I find that my grinder is a ZB21. The through bore is 22mm. there are a few other differences from the ZB25 but I should be able to get it back in operation. I might have to graft an ER chuck on to it instead of a 6 jaw chuck.
