Faded Heerless lathe information for speeds
Gday all,
Ive got an old Herless metal lathe. Im gearing up to restore it and fit a dro. At the moment the aluminium speeds, feeds etc information plate is bearly visible (I dont know the technical term) it a aluminium one (not imbossed) its like its been spray painted on at the factory.
Does any know where I could buy a replacement of know of some to print up a decal for it?
What have other people done in this situation?
Cheers

Hi and welcome to the Forum,
Herless, not Heerless is the brand name you seek, and Herless is now owned by Hare and Forbes.
I sincerely doubt you may be able to source the plate as a spare part, but not all is lost.
See the statement on the top of the page in this link.
https://www.machines4u.com.au/brand/herless/
It is entirely possible that H & F MIGHT have information from past brochures, photos or manuals from which a replacement plate may be fabricated. Whether it is laser or screen printing .
I don't know the details but I do recall forum members in the past have made replacement name badges and Id plates for their machines and equipment. Some may be able to assist you.
Take a photos of your lathe and send it to Hare & Forbes and they may be able to help you in other ways.It is entirely possible that H &F may have information on past Herless lathes such as brochures, photos and copies of old manuals.
None of that is any good to you until your lathe is identified as a specific Herless model.Hopefully that is legible on the plate you already have.
Another thought is to go all over the lathe to find any other badges ,labels and serial nos. Any thing you find might help in identifying the model of the lathe and might in turn lead to a manual which in turn MAY have the same information as the feed and speed information plate.
As indicated by others a photo plus other Id nos and Manf dates here in the forum might lead to one of our members being able to identify the model of your Herless lathe.
Below is an example of a Herless lathe feed speed plate I found online.

My guess would be that it may have been screen printed if it's not embossed at all. The one on my Graziano definitely appears to have been a hand lettered screen print.
Don't think I can be bothered investing in the required gear for screen printing, especially as the plate needs many holes of varying sizes in it anyway, so it's been scanned, the missus has redrawn it in Corel, and the intention is to try and get it laser marked (not engraved), and the holes cut. A number of more pressing things interrupted the process, so I need to get back to it at some point.
May just end up being laser engraved in the end, but I'd prefer to try and get it laser marked as I believe that leaves a flush surface that would match the original, rather than burning some of the material away.

Enter the info onto a spreadsheet, print it, laminate it, hang it up near the lathe.
