Default Cheap Flaring Cup Grinding Wheel

I have just tried out one of the el cheapo Epay 4" pink 'Flaring Cup Grinding Wheels', numerous Chinese sellers have these.

I must have been the Friday night knock off time because this particular one I have, has significant axial runout to the point of being scary.

I sharpened a few drills with it but I had to dress the face in order to make the wheel useable . Maybe Norton next time !

Edit: there is also some degree of radial runout !

I've bought a few white and pink cup type wheels - as wheelinround says they all need truing, I initially used a diamond type glass cutter which works ok but have since purchased the real thing which is much the same as the glass cutter but bigger and looks to be a bit more robust, it does make a mess and if you have machinery nearby that may be sensitive to grit then make sure you keep everything covered (old bed sheets are ok) until the trueing is finished and all of the grit has been cleaned up.

    Default Cups

Yes you can true up certain types of grinding wheels. The hard to fix problem with flared cups is the radial runout, if the runout is significant, you have to remove a lot of material from the angled side face/wall which means you end up with a unequal wall thickness. Plus there is a risk of the cup exploding if you stress the wall too much. In my case, maybe the Asian manufacturer made a bad batch and I was just unlucky to be the recipient of one.

In the engineering game, it is a big no no to use the side of a flared cup alox wheel for any work.
