How to remove chuck
A friend has sent me a video of an old machine he's bought in the hope I'd know how to remove the chuck. He's bringing a head over for me to look at but before I start pulling it apart I thought someone might have an idea of where to start. It's only got an 8mm chuck & he wants to go bigger. I couldn't load the video so this photo is all you'll get.
F K Pollard & Co were the manufacturers & I think this is the setup. Pollard 9dfx drill.jpgLast edited by Snapey; 27th Jan 2022 at 01:12 AM. Reason: Video wouldn't load.

Hi Snapey,
That drill was only intended to handle small drills and the chuck was fitted to suit that application ! The chuck is on a JT1 taper and really shouldn't be changed. I would leave it as is.Best Regards:

A set of wedges are needed I think for a job this delicate. I vaguely recall making a set of JT1 wedges in one of my videos because they are not very common. However, looking at the lowest speed of 2700rpm, that is the speed you would run 1/8" Steel, and around the speed you would run 3/8" Al. If the chuck has an 8mm capacity at the moment, there is no point in putting a bigger one on as bits greater than 8mm will be running overspeed with all the issues that will generate.

Many thanks for the replies gents. You confirmed my thoughts of how the chuck is fixed although a screw in type chuck also crossed my mind. Luckily my engineering skills out weigh my computer skills so sorting the drill will be much easier than downloading a video.
Just to fill you in on the reason for getting the drill working is that my mate has been using the rather large drill table just as a work bench but because the drill is there he thought about using it. He doesn't have a computer so I found the above example on Google. It is similar but the heads do look smaller than what he has although totally useless as a general purpose drill.
I'll have a look at it but the too hard basket seems obvious to me.
