Does any one who has been the game for a long time recognise what these are and what tool holder they fit...i am thinking a parting off bit?

Definitely look like parting/grooving inserts, quite possibly obsolete

    https://www.travers.com/category/par...ooving-inserts and https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/category.aspx?catid=8265

They are a double ended Grooving Parting Insert. They would fit something like the toolholder is the Ausee link. I found other pictures on the internet by Googling 'double ended lathe grooving parting insert' but none of the pictures that I seen showed an Insert with a notch or cut out in its lower part. Having the notch they may have been meant for a specific holder. Someone else may be able to help you further. All the best for the New Year.

No they won't, that style of tool holder uses inserts that have a V-groove along the top and bottom and the cutting edges can't be higher than the rest of the insert because they won't clamp.

Found some similar at work in a drawer during cleanup and we just threw them out because nothing uses them anymore

Hence why I stated 'SOMETHING LIKE' meaning they won't necessarily fit that holder itself, but something like it.

Sorry missed that. I still say they're obsolete, never seen anything like those in any current catalogue.

Could they be cutters for a head in a Radial Arm Saw for cutting Trenches across a 4 X 2?
What is the measurement across the double? If its 52 or 35mm I reckon its from a Trenching Head
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

I am speculating that I reckon they are lathe stuff as when my bro left the govt many years ago he had accumulated a bit of HSS and other lathe tools. This was among all that stuff. I ended up with it when we cleaned out Dads shed as bro didnt have a use for it...he was always wanting a lathe but never got around to it.

Tungsten Carbide used to bring a decent price for recycling (at least $10/kg). I always throw my trashed inserts into a little tub. A few more years, or a few solid end mills, and I'm there

In a home/hobby situation, not easy to save enough to sell, but get together with a few others who live nearby, and that is beer money!
