Default Vice restoration, how to sort out little nick's and imperfections in castings.

    Hi all,

I have an old Dawn 4sp vice here that I would like to do a restoration on, there are a few nicks in the casting where it looks like it has been hit with an angle grinder, but they look very minor to me compared to what I see on the vices at my workplace.

Anyway would be be the best way fix these. I have access to Mig, tig, arc and oxy or would something like an epoxy such as jb weld be a better choice?

I still need to strip the paint down to the bare casting.

    Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

    I did a resto on a Record #3.
For no reason other than the fact that I had them at hand, I melted some Nickel 99 stick rods into the gouged and dings, and then ground / polished them flat. Adds a nice effect of silver patches where a paint finish will not be used.
I'd be equally happy with a hard epoxy filler if there will be paint and filler used in the final coating system.

Because it is cast (and I think the SP means spheroidal graphite too), welding is probably not going to be good for it. A wipe of epoxy filler is probably quickest and easiest.

Mostly people just use body filler, personally I would just leave it.

+1 for epoxy or body filler if you want to make it pretty, or just an extra thick coat of paint if you're just going for function

The epoxy seems like a no brainer.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
