Default Don't give up on parting - I finally found a tool that works for me.

I'm know I'm not the only one who struggles with parting, or the only one that has a collection of destroyed parting tools/holders as evidence of that struggle and is familiar with the sharp "crack" sound a HSS blade makes when it shatters.

I've tried HSS blades in a couple of different styles and sizes, and also the MGEHR toolholders that take MGMN300 inserts.
Sometimes they work, sometimes I just can't get them to run without chatter or destroying themselves. Only thing that is consistent is I never know how it will go when I use them.
Here's part of the graveyard collection:

I'm convinced that with some parting tools the range of parameters they work well at is very narrow. Get into that range and they work really well, but just outside it they are horrible.

I've finally found a tool and insert that consistently works well for me. Its an old Sandvik holder and blade that I was given by a friend ages ago.
Takes Sandvik's 151.2 inserts which unfortunately aren't very common, or particularly cheap.
I'm sure there are similar styles that work just as well or even better with different lathes/operators but for me this is the best I've used so far.

After a few successful attempts, I decided I was confident enough to try parting with the power feed for the first time ever.
Worked well, and also meant I had enough free hands to take a quick video and brush on some oil at the same time:

Its a great feeling when you can part with a bit of confidence - so if you're struggling, don't give up!!

I had a Chinese knockoff of that tool for the AL335, think mine was the 26mm tall with the 3mm inserts (SPB26-3). Never had a problem with it, very rarely even changed an insert. Used a HSS blade for aluminium, the insert tool for everything else.

Got a similar SECO one with the Graziano, but where the old Chinese tool the insert was full width all the way to the back (ie. the slot for the insert is cut all the way through the 'blade', I think like your Sandvik?), this SECO takes an insert that becomes narrow behind the cutting edge, and is only half as wide as the 'blade'. Obviously the slot in the 'blade' is only half depth. Don't know whether the inserts I have for the SECO are really old school and fragile, the holder is flogged, my toolpost is rotating, or it's actually only intended for grooving, but I absolutely murder inserts in it - constantly losing corners, and sometimes breaking the insert in half.

Really do need to get myself another of the Chinese SPB26-3 tools to see if I can get back to annoyance free parting....

We just switched to the TAG style tool, everyone in the shop says they are the best parting tools they have ever used.

The J type inserts cut like butter on mild steel and other softish stuff, the C type is good for 4140 and hard stuff. There's also special ground tips for aluminium, brass and plastic but the J tips will do fine if you don't want to buy a pack of everything
