Collet Chuck query
Just got the new ER20 Collet Chuck for the Toyo lathe yesterday. Not ready for fitting yet as I need to counterbore mounting holes to suit M5 shoulder bolts with the 4mm thread as this has 5mm clearance holes and the Toyo spindle is threaded 4mm. PCD and register diameter is perfect but will need a 1.8mm spacer on spindle to compensate for the difference in register depth. Now, I am a bit worried that all may not be good with the chuck, as the flange thickness varies up to .005".
If I was to mount a piece of bar in a lathe, machine to 13mm diameter, then mount the chuck to this using the 13mm collet and check runout on the back face of the mount, would this give a good indication of how accurate it is, or is not?Nev.

Hi Nev, When I made mine, it was a bit more out than that, it's the taper inside where the collet sits, that is the important details
When you get the chuck mounted, you may find that to get an accurate position it will need to be relocated to any of the positions determined by the bolt holes, run a dial indicator on the inside taper to find the most accurate position, then mark it so that it will always be placed in the same location.
You may even find that it will need a bit of a trim on the inside with a T/P grinder, to get it dead on.

I'd prefer not to mount the chuck yet as this will require the mods and that will void any chance of returning it if it is a lemon. At least this way, I am hoping that it will determine if it's good enough to keep or send back ASAP. The back face may well be in alignment with the collet mounting and the variation in thickness is because of the front face, but I need a way to get some idea without modifying the chuck yet.

Maybe; maybe not...
It depends on how well the collet seats. You could try that but as well as run out on the flange, you might want to check places like the shoulder behind the collet thread - it should have been done at the same time so that should help you see whether it is just the flange that is (potentially) out or just whether the test bar is not concentric with the collet body.

Just did some searching for collet chuck problems and came across this video -

Don't know why he has a DTI for testing. Runout is clearly visible without it.Nev.
