Have also been reading a few US based threads. Very few original steadies around, possibly explained by the brochure listing these as an option. Not uncommon for the change gears to go missing.

The lathe you have a link to does not show a fixed or travelling steady! There is no taper turning attachment. There is no toolpost grinder attachment. There is no milling attachment. There is no dividing head attachment. The cross slide does not have a T-slotted table. It has a four-way toolpost, not a "quick change" toolpost......
What i an saying is, the lathe you are looking at is obviously very good, but for the money, it is very basic, and lacks a great deal, altough it would produce fine work - if you have the skill to drive it. A Hercus 260 (metric) at half the price (with some / many of the accessories listed) would, in my opinion, be a better buy - as an entry level machine. A Hercus would also have the advantage of being easier to sell off when your skill level increases, and you need a bigger (or better) lathe.

That is fair enough comment. My only hesitancy is around value.
However, the sort of thing you describe doesn't seem overly common in the circles I travel in. Possibly because the are a thousand others also looking for that deal so they're gone before I even see them. I may get lucky and something comes up tomorrow but equally I could still be looking in 12 months time.
I think my alternative is more likely to be something new from H&F.

BETTER TO HAVE TOOLS YOU DON'T NEED THAN TO NEED TOOLS YOU DON'T HAVE

I don't think Nowra would be cost effective unless I could collect it myself and then I'd have questions about how I'd go about it, having neither a trailer or a vehicle suitable for that sort of towing.
Size wise I don't have any real requirements. Anything over 400 swing and 1m centres is probably too big. I'd settled on 'about AL960B size'.

So this turned up locally.
Weiler Condor VS
Should land next week, followed shortly by foreign orders from my mates. Included plenty of tooling to get me started.
