    Default Steel Suppliers Melbourne

I know this question gets asked regularly, but given the constantly shifting landscape, it's worth asking again.
My go-to suppliers for small pieces keep closing down. Lockbar in Cheltenham and Ian Stansfield-Smith are gone.
Bright Steels in Braeside have been great to me, but will only sell small pieces if they have offcuts.

I need a short piece (less than 50mm) of 60mm bright round bar. Will buy more if I have to, but I don't need a 4m length at $570.

Appreciate any recommendations for a supplier of short lengths on the south side of Melbourne. Failing that, someone interstate that doesn't charge like a wounded bull for postage.

    TIA
    Chris

I'm surprised they won't at least do a 1m minimum instead of the full bar.

These guys have an online store where you can just plug in quantity and length, but in Heidelberg https://handysteel.com.au/bright
When I was making furniture we used to get bits and pieces cut to length from Moorabbin Steel, I don't think they had a minimum order Moorabbin Steel

They might. I haven't asked. Still a lot more than I will ever use.

For small bits I get it posted over from Tyne Valley Metals in Taswegia

If you require specific lengths outside of the auction listings message him, he will cut to order.

Looks like the largest solid round they do is 24mm. But I'll keep them in mind. I go to Springvale often.

Thanks for the replies. Those sources will all come in handy in future.

Steve (OxxAndBert) is kindly sending me a piece of 63mm round.

ABC Specialty Metals in Hallam, on Hallam Road opposite the railway station, have 4140, they also will cut to length but you might wait several days, every time I go in there they are loading semi trailer loads for delivery and it's clear my little requirements are more of an annoyance than anything but they have never turned me away.

That is a convenient location: get off the train, walk over and buy your steel
